Re: Letter to the Head Master
I can't seem to see the 1960 photo (or ANY of Lieberman's) but if it's a very small cup it is probably the Meek Pancake Cup given by Miss Meek, Mrs Ritches' prdecessor as Coleridge matron, for the Col A vs Col B Shrove Tuesday pancake race.

Re: Letter to the Head Master
I had a different version Richard, having been in Col B at the time. A 13-year-old friend of mine told me that he had been reticent about going back for the start of the summer term in 1956 and his mother dragged out of him why this was the case. He was one of those to whom Buck paid particular att...

Richard,
a propos paras 2, 5 and 9 re references, I would be tempted to ask for the actual texts, and who signed them.

Trevor Hoskins was in Col B about six years ahead of me. He left 1949 IIRC.

Re: Explanation of the 'Tube'
:D Oh dear, I'm extremely sorry for my incorrect grammar. What is "correct" grammar? I am in constant touch with many authors, mainly US nationals, and this is the subject of constant argument. They seem to have at least three schools of thought of which The Chicago School get a lot of co...

Re: What was the food chain?
I was in Prep B for the school year 1946-7 and had no idea that Mr Pink was anything but an ordinary schoolmaster. I do remember being taught map reading very well by him in geography. He had a small rubber doggy bone that he sued as a missile towards the inattentive whose weird shape produced unexp...

Boom McNutt took me through Herodotus in UF and it was plod plod plod as I remember although I liked Herodotus in translation later in life. He sat at his desk I suppose composing his Ximines crosswords for the Observer while I, unnoticed, wrote out all the Greek propositions on the cover of my Gree...

Re: What was the food chain?
As I seem to remember, the food was supposed to have ' improved ' under the tenure of a new school physician, Dr. ' Tommy ' Scott. All I can remember from my first week in 1958 is that it was edible, ( just ). There was no choice, so it was a case of eat or starve. However, I'm drifting off topic. ...

Re: Christ's Hospital / The Church of England / Child Abuse
Sticking with the C of E, press reports today that Carey withheld letters from the police. I would like to think that 'obstructing' charges could follow from that.

I had a quick google re Kimbolton. It seems they were passed a bad 'un by Giggleswick even though he was under investigation. It's a peculiarly evil form of Pass the Parcel.

Re: Christ's Hospital / The Church of England / Child Abuse
Archbishop Carey was on the news this evening, of course only a smidgin of his appearance BUT he came across as a complete idiot, unable to comprehend that Bishop Ball was a baddie. After all, he was a BISHOP, wasn't he? Carey still doesn't seem to have either the common sense or the decency to apol...

Re: Phone boxes
Herrumph! In my day ONE telephone was enough for the entire school - it was in the Headmaster's office but plugged through to Col B out of hours. To use it (not that I or any boy ever did) one picked up the earpiece, held one's mouth to the mouthpiece sticking out of a little wooden box on the wall,...

Re: The arrival of the girls
The girls came to Horsham for the Tercentenary in 1953. One, part of a group being shepherded around by Grecians, on passing the pillar box outside the Common Room, asked 'Are you allowed to post things in that?'

I think these were probably posted on here a few years’ back but here are some youtube videos from the Poulton era. Might help refresh some memories and aid those who weren’t there at the time put unfamiliar faces to familiar names: Highway 1989 At about 23.02 the girl being interviewed grew into m...
