Re: Politics
While I can't disagree with most of what you say (nicely put, if I may say so!), the idea that there is no similar 'old boy network' in many other countries is way off the mark. It's not what you know, etc. etc.

What an enigmatic little post! Any chance of an explanation for those of us who never knew in the first place?

Re: Michael Cherniavsky
I'm fairly sure my post was removed in error, as I simply stated that he returned to CH in 1983 and when he died in 1992 his ashes were scattered in the grounds. I didn't know MC personally, but Internet research suggests he was highly respected and fondly remembered wherever he went.

Re: Jack Hards and Wells, Prep B bootroom
1970s icon Pegleg ("Next smelly boy!") abused our hair and the skin of our necks throughout my time at CH Horsham. He did have a shop of his own, but it was in Shoreham-by-Sea, not Horsham, presumably so that Houseyboys couldn't easily exact revenge by throwing bricks through his shop window or pou...

Re: Ghosts and Spirits !!
I'm quite fond of spirits, particularly a decent single malt. I also have a rather large bottle of Calvados that occasionally emanates an almost irresistable attraction.

Re: When You're A Ghost, Which Parts of CH Will You Haunt And Why?
Interesting question. First, I'd have to decide whether I wanted to haunt somewhere I was happy or somewhere I hated. It would also have to be somewhere where there is some action - a bored ghost is a sad ghost. If the former, it would have to be the theatre. If the latter... golly, what choices... ...

Where have all the ladies gone?
After a long and painful absence tending my dogs, my fruit farm and my bank balance, I return to find that the ladies seem to have disappeared! The forum seems to have become a Gentlemen's Club - you can almost smell the leather and cigars. Back a week and nary a female post. Have they all found mea...

Re: So, the underground tunnels...
So, if it really was Kit who put me on to Gerald Kersh, it leaves the question: was Kit lowbrow and unimaginative, as I thought then? Or was he far more discerning and thoughtful, as I now suspect? A third possibility exists: you now realise you have more in common than you imagined, therefore he c...

Re: Marching
Interesting thread. As a senior monitor in a junior house and a house captain in a senior house, as well as being an RAF cadet, I must have been involved in marching drills at some point, with all that 'eyes left', 'by the left/right' and 'left wheel' stuff, but I'm blowed if I can remember much abo...

I remember last year, one of the leaving GE from Thorn A made a list of stuff he had to do before he left. His last night job was to take a dump on Dr Connor's (the deputy head) car. He took a picture of it as well. Consigned to Thorn legend that was! Well, it's good to see that an excellent educat...

Re: Jicker, Housey slang and individual Houses
Yet another is “dressing” meaning to stay in line while marching and take your position from an appointed person (usually on the left of a row, eg following the instruction, “Dress by the left”). Till today I presumed that this was a standard military term, yet it is not used in Scottish country da...
