The picture is called "London Visitors". It is used for the front jacket illustration of a book called "London" by an American called John Russell (pub. 1994).

There was a hall trade in Thornton B called "Door". It went to two quite senior people and involved closing the door between the Hall and the kitchens during grace, and making sure no one barged in from the kitchen. Thornton A (I think, or it may have been Mid A) had a similar trade. They ...

Re: DOGS

This must have been before my time. I only remember Chlorine, and then Boodle.

I was always under the impression that all of Kirby's dogs were called "Boodle". Pop Massen had a large black Labrador that wandered around aimlessly and I seem to remember another dog down the Middleton end of the Avenue. Boodle was Chlorine's successor. He (I think Boodle was a he) was ...

CH dogs

How about some memories of CH dogs? I propose to start with Chlorine, who must be the only dog to get a public obit at school assembly. CMESeaman regretted "the passing of that best of all worst dogs" (see below). Chlorine was one of a litter whose other members were named Bromine, Iodine ...

No one has mentioned Marat/Sade or whatever its full title was. It features a very young and pretty Glenda Jackson as a narcoleptic playing Charlotte Corday.

And Closely Observed Trains: much better than its title.

Futtock's End is a good short.

I think Littlefield would be amazed to find himself in this rarefied company. (And probably vice versa). Actually, this is the first good word I've ever heard about the man.

Trivial point: did anyone apart from me think that sleepy Tom Keeley spoke like DJ John Peel? No? Just me then...again. THK was a Brummy and John Peel was a Scouser and I've heard others say the accents sound similar but to me there seem to be quite marked differences. THK's accent made him a figur...

Ron Lorimer - sorry people but I can't get excited about him. He didn't like non-conformists. I gather Lorimer was a pillar of the establishment in his later years, but when he first arrived he was a non-conformist himself. He was believed to be the first teacher to sit down at lunch on the dais wi...

Corks certainly didn't leave before Dec 55. He was there the whole of my first year 55/56, and I think the second as well. And he didn't leave hastily. His successor Jack Rust was not popular at first. (Corks was a hard act to follow.) A famous note was found in the choir room: Wanted, rust remover,...
