Re: Expelled

As a bit of light-hearted relief on a Monday morning, and to pursue the names topic, why are the copses at either end of the Quarter Mile called 'East Gun Copse' and 'West Gun Copse', respectively? David This was answered in another thread a while back. There used to be guns there (de-commissioned ...

Re: Expelled

This thread has taken off again in various directions in the week I've been away. But on the substantive issue: I recall coming back to (I think) a Lent Term in about 1957, and on the Saturday afternoon the whole school was summoned to Big School where Seaman announced that two boys had been expelle...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Can I make a general point? rockfreak has said on more than one occasion that this is (largely) an inherent boarding-school problem. He points out that children at boarding schools are not under the observation of parents, who might be quick to pick up on psychological indicators. I am sure he is ri...

Re: CH and flu

I had two inoculations at CH. One was for polio and I think was administered to everyone whose parents consented. It was a jab, not oral, and I remember it because I had a funny turn afterwards and had to lie down on a sicker bed for an hour or so. The other was a smallpox vaccination. This was just...

Re: Karim's sentence hearing

I have not heard or read all the details of the evidence, and I know none of those involved. But from what I have read, I would have judged the offences committed by Burr and Webb to have been more heinous than those committed by Karim, not least because their victims were younger. The relative leng...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

From many years of conversation with people who went to other boarding schools, I doubt if CH is a special case or really deserves special mention. Downside and Ampleforth are of public interest because of the wider child-abuse scandal affecting the Catholic Church worldwide. Ampleforth in particula...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Sorry to go Back to Buck again. It was my information to JR that caused him to close the AH Buck site way back when. A quick pedantic note. I don't think Buck left on a Sunday. I remember going up to Big Side with a friend, the two of us laden with bats and pads for a house cricket match (a non-Sun...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

It was on 6 May 1956 (as recorded in his published letter dated the following day to Edmund Blunden). He was my Latin teacher on the LF, and for the rest of term we were taught first by the grecian Jasper Griffin, and then by the Vicar of Itchingfield.

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Buck was just allowed to go away and get a job at Oxford University Press (given by a sympathetic Old Blue I believe) without prosecution We are talking about 1956, when prosecutions for institutional sexual abuse were almost unheard of (precisely because of the damage it would do to the institutio...

Re: A comment from a Sexual Abuse Victim from CH

My respect too. Your reference to the Dunblane killer may refer to something I said somewhere. If so, you misunderstand me. You say 'should have been allowed to be a paedophile'. But paedophilia is a sexual orientation, and not something you are 'allowed' to be. You can only mean: 'should have been ...

Re: Hello! I'm back! Is there anybody here?

One of the things that would be useful on some folk albums is a lyric sheet. I don't know whether folk singers inflect in a particular way but I was listening to Eliza Carthy's Anglicana album the other night and I was struggling to follow the words. Ah, but that would be the death-knell of Lady Mo...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

The common thread that ties them all together is that the school did nothing but simply moved them on. Let's not be anachronistic. It used to be taken for granted that any institution would seek to protect its own reputation. Not so much by cover-up and denial, but simply by not hanging out the dir...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Just for the record: I would be vehemently against any concerted action concerned with alleged misbehaviour by members of staff now dead. The obvious reason is that they cannot now defend themselves, and, the corollary, the accusers would not be required to get their evidence together properly (if t...

Re: What was the food chain?

And the moral of the story is that even the clown knew it was wrong. So why didn't the Senior Management Team? Your terminology is anachronistic. It hardly applied to industry and commerce in the 1950s, and if you'd applied the term 'management', let alone 'management team', to a school at that tim...

Re: Will Dobbie be defrocked?

I don't think the CoE do defrocking anymore, that's why Bishop Ball is still Bishop Ball. They can suspend him from functioning (working) as a priest, but can't divest him of the title or position. Kinda like the BMA, they can strike a doc off, but can't strip them of the qualifications. The proble...
