Re: Reading to the dormitory

Yes, this 5%-or-so correspond with the hegemonic class groupings in British society, and until really quite recently "boarding school survivors" also dominated English literary culture; so down to the mid-C20 – and indeed beyond – we get a massive over-representation of this class in the fiction th...

Re: Ajaz Karim found guilty

As the father of 3 daughters I have one observation. How come, in a co-educational environment, a male teacher was apparently allowed to massage or even mix with naked or semi naked female pupils without a female (teacher, matron) being present? As the father of two daughters, I find that an excell...

Re: Sentence of Peter Webb referred to Court of Appeal

No. Historic sexual abuse is one thing, corporal punishment another. As others have pointed out, corporal punishment was the norm at that time. So was much else which is now considered abusive. A starlet in a Hollywood studio was expected to act as a 'comfort woman' for important male visitors. Her...

Another change to have occurred in this area is the re-erection of Temple Bar (which once stood in Fleet St. and was removed as an impediment to traffic, being moved to Theobalds Park in Herts.) in a position roughly corresponding to that of the group of cranes in John's bottom picture above.

Re: Sentence of Peter Webb referred to Court of Appeal

I see Sillett has an MBE for charity work. Ironic that the only thing I remember him for during the 8 years I spent at CH was that we were all terrified of him, his temper and his ´tangents`(using a metre ruler to impart corporal punishment on young boys' bottoms). And you haven't made a complaint ...

Or 'screwing'.

Or 'getting your finger out and getting stuck in' (admonition from impatient female partner, and the true origin of these phrases).

Re: Reading to the dormitory

I take your point. One might also note that in Germany at least, the 'life reform' people, who embraced things like dress reform (no stiff collars or corsets), vegetarianism, naturism, 'free love', were often fervent Nazis. This was in part because they had a common enemy: the 'bourgeois mentality' ...

Re: Reading to the dormitory

The trouble with the 'words' in Lady Chatterley is that as the main reason for the book's prohibition, they raised Lawrence almost to the status of martyr. At the trial, the Bishop of Woolwich, author of that work of pop-radical theology, 'Honest to God', when asked to expatiate on the book's 'ethic...

John's was Mottingham 3373 and Michael's was Thames Ditton 3373. I only remember that because I was friends with both of their sisters at the same time!!

Hope you didn't get the numbers mixed up, then...

Things resembling bolios (hard cylindrical pillows) are common in Germany. They're called 'Nackenstützen' (neck-rests or 'neck-supports') and many people swear by them.

Re: Tom Lawson: the interview

To be heretical, I'm amazed that anyone learns anything* at a co-ed school. Pretty boys were time-wasting enough, but (a) such liaisons were, shall we say, dangéreuses, and (b) they weren't in the same classroom. *what you do learn, of course, is how to relate to the opposite sex, which many of us d...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

My view is that historic cases of any sort ought not to be prosecutable. Seriously? Yes, seriously. I live in a country where the right not to be tried after a certain period is regarded with the same sort of reverence as the British regard trial by jury. Britain and Ireland are, I think, the only ...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

Could all the victims, paid or otherwise, go to the police today and see their abusers successfully prosecuted? Or are the abusers in some sense exempt from prosecution because they were only teenagers at the time and weren't in a position of trust (and anyway everyone does silly things in their te...

Re: W.P.C. Davies

There were 'hearties' and 'arties'. While WPC was on tour with the British Lions in South Africa, his stand-in as junior housemaster of ThB was David Herbert. You could hardly imagine two people more different. WPC was nice enough, but the artily inclined certainly preferred Sloppy Herbert, who prob...
