Re: On this day 70 years ago
Yes, at Hertford we did have high standards of music and drama. But it was all in-house obviously. I missed the outside culture that I’d started to enjoy in London - galleries, concerts, festivals, theatre and film. In 7 years I only remember being shown 2 films at school, The Dambusters, of course,...

Re: On this day 70 years ago
I too arrived at Hertford September 1953. I remember being stripped naked in the wardrobe room of 1s and re-clothed from starched knickers up. Clapham (long before gentrification) was also bomb damaged. Coal was delivered by horse drawn cart. I brought my ration book to school but rationing ended so...

Re: Amelia White (in the Daily Mail) deplores her CH years
I’ve said more than once that my experience of Hertford in the 1950s was deplorable, largely due to Miss West’s unsuitability as a Head and to the low academic results, spartan living conditions, incessant prayers, Miss MacTier, Sister, scratchy underwear, chapel, dreadful food, lack of support, cen...

Re: Angela Tennick 1s and 3s 1958 -1965
There’s nothing of interest about Hertford here. Just boys’ abuse, not our story. As for DR she should never have been let loose on the teaching profession. A martinet with no life experience. There are a few Hertford memories on facebook.

Re: Herts Memories
Oxford and Cambridge entrance were very rare in my time. No special preparation. School uniform worn for interviews. Nearly all of my cohort actually failed A Level History because Miss Page was ill and we hadn’t been taught properly. These days you’d sue! I spent a year at LSE and didn’t like it be...

Re: Writing letters home
Only once, at age about 13, I wrote home that I was not happy. Miss McTier (7s) refused to post it, gave it back to me, saying “you wouldn’t want to upset your parents”. After that I stuck to netball results and what I was learning on the piano.

Re: Hertford reunion 8th February
Anyone driving to Horsham on Feb 8th from Oxford, Reading or central London? It's a difficult rail journey for me . . .
