Tomorrow

THE DEFICIT There is a much more important deficit than any they talk about - the Deficit of Compassion. In her blog "Wonder in Aliceland" (q.v.), Alice writes: "nations are not households. If individuals are in debt, it makes sense to make cutbacks. Switch from Tesco to Aldi. Stop running a second ...

Re: Happy Birthday DavebytheSea !

Dear John. Thank you so much. I haven't been on here for ages - I'm sorry. But delighted to know that I am still remembered here (if only by you). Very busy preparing Moonshot for launch on April 1. Two lovely YOBs antifouled her the other day and both are singing with me in Rossini's Petite Messe S...

Re: CH cross-Channel Regatta, July 11-14

This weekend the first of 6 yachts crewed by Old Blues will start making its way towards Dartmouth for the first-ever cross-Channel regatta organised by any school alumni organisation. We all meet up in Dartmouth on 11 July and sail for St Peter Port on Sunday 13. Deputy Headmaster Thomas Lawson wil...

Re: The Charge - has it been changed?

You see what I mean, Rockfreak? There's no possibility of real debate, because their instincts are to try to trash your motives .. err, sorry, take the argument ad hominem . Sad, but all they want is to reminisce. hmm... not true! Some of us, however ancient, want to do more than reminisce. Mere me...

Re: CH cross-Channel Regatta, July 11-14

CH C&SC Regatta, 2014 6 yachts about 30 OBs and counting . Gerald Harris (ColA 56-63) has been able to offer himself and Vigornia , his wonderful Halberg-Rassey 36, for our Regatta. Re: Domestic Maids

A Polish maid appeared for a bit. It was expedient that a boy and her left the premises. ... and there were the Sicker nurses ..... in his book Growing up in A War (Amazon £4.69 and an excellent read about CH), Bryan Magee rather touchingly describes how a young nurse took pity on the injured Magee...

Re: Pocket-Money at CH.

Genuinely can't remember the exact amounts but I seem to remember it being about £30 per term by the end of my time there in 1990. From 1947-1955 it was, I think, 30/- a term (30 shillings for anyone born later) but when Jonathan was there from 2005-7 we gave him the minimum of £20 a term. He never...

... and how Mr Haslehurst got me through O-level Latin, the Lord only knows. However, the only sex education I received at CH was in his lessons - it all emerged when attempting to translate a piece about the rape of the Sabine women.

Re: World War 2, CH Teachers, etc

Fascinating! All these guys I had forgotten. Yes, I was taught by 'Hag' Hirst in the 3rd form (11 yr olds) and also by the rather uninspiring Mr Gerrish, who taught piano, not, as I remember, the 'cello. He was fond of speaking of his musical descent (i.e. who was taught by whom) from Beethoven. Eve...

Re: Gruesome Encounter of the Newsome Kind

What a wonderful thread! I now feel I know a little more about CH in those years which hitherto I have regarded as the dark ages which followed the glorious post-war years when I was there and preceded the Poulton/ Southern era when care supplanted survival. I did visit the school once in the sixtie...
