PETITION: (Split out) Is 26% Full-Fee Paying Pupils Too High?

I have split out the off-topic comments in this thread No, you have censored them. Strangely you have kept Taplin's reply to the first part of my comment which now stands out of context - and contains several starry eyed claims about Seaman that anyone who was there in the 60's will know to be untr...

Re: Is 26% Full-Fee Paying Pupils Too High?

I don’t think you should apologize or self-sensor because a master met an unfortunate end – whatever it was. CH under Seaman was a very strange place. There were a few brilliant masters but most were mediocre. Some were completely incompetent and had no interest in their work or the outcomes of thei...

Re: photo wanted

one 'public' picture that fits the bill; it was of a number of quite senior boys sitting casually (but posed) around the fountain in about 1961
It was about '67. Tate & Lyle commissioned it for a publicity shot. You could try their archivist if the CH one doesn't have it.

Re: Jack Hards and Wells, Prep B bootroom

Hards and Squit officiated every morning in the Prep Hall over the one third of a pint of milk all school children had to drink. Hards had a wooden leg and Squit was mentally disabled - as was Edie the cleaner. For some reason, people used to call out "Oink, oink" at Hards. What a bunch of obnoxious...

I didn't attend a leavers service ...

Of all the spin attempts to excuse getting sent down joining the police is certainly the most original.

Re: Jack Hards and Wells, Prep B bootroom

Yes - Jack Hards and Squit Wells were Prep A's as well. Please don't forget Edie with her massive rotary floor polisher and a tray of mysterious, waxy goop that she splatted on the floor with a wooden stick.

Re: Senior Grecians

Fatty Churchill's (PB) dates are correct as is his succession after Peter Smith (PA). Great guy. Didn't believe in discipline or punishment, thus very popular in PB. Classics scholar and consequently a big favorite of Seaman's. Near albino with a blush that turned his face fire engine red. It was ou...

Re: Expelled

There was shoplifting gang of about 8 expelled c.1966. They were busted by Tom Keeley when they had so much merchandise their study doors wouldn't close. Some say that was the start of Keeley's obsessive amateur detective activities ... others attribute the inspiration of the Inspector Clouseau movi...

Re: Noseblowing by numbers - how did it work?

Still going strong in Prep A c.1960s

But surely the most notable CH "wellness" item was the advice given in the dormitory on a very formal, printed notice advising "A daily bowel action at a regular time".

Considering the diet we were on, weekly would have been quite an achievement.

Re: Reading to the dormitory

Roger Martin bought Norman Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth" and read it to us in Prep A.
I read it to my kids and noticed a recent review in the Guardian.
Magical book ... and RM was magical master.

Re: Death of Bomber Nicholson

"Bomber" was a remarkable teacher in that he had a rare, if not unique, energy and enthusiasm which he transmitted to his pupils and simultaneously inculcated them with both confidence in themselves that they could progress and an interest in the subjects he taught. That sentence is so true. I last...
