Re: New daily maths puzzle - give it a go and share?

I tried it. Got an answer in one guess, but it took a while to figure out what the rules were. You did explain them clearly and simply, but I couldn't believe they were so simple. Then the lack of brackets bothered me - but eventually I realised that I didn't need brackets. Conclusion: it works fine...

... the school Calendar. This was a small piece of printed cardboard, which also mentioned all the sporting and Debating Society fixtures, names of visiting preachers, meetings of the 1930 Society (does it still exist?), etc. A copy of this termly Calendar was issued to every boy. In my time (1954-...

First day at CH - 1954

Start of the Autumn term, 1954. This must be our first day, with our "nursemaids" who have probably just taught us how to pin our bands. Nursemaids at the back: Pearl, Ashton, Hawkins Squits in the front row: Wexler, Liles, Blogg That's what I wrote on the back of the photo at the time, bu...

... John Wexler might disagree with me but to Kit it was a total ban on anything; he just m i g h t have given permission for the National Anthem, perhaps even Rule Britannia but Jerusalem would have been trying it on. I suspect Kit categorised music by what the performers were wearing: hymns (cass...

Re: Films at CH, 1956-1960

If someone wants to compile all the titles of films shown at CH Horsham in those days, I believe they were listed on the school Calendar. This was a small piece of printed cardboard, which also mentioned all the sporting and Debating Society fixtures, names of visiting preachers, meetings of the 19...

Re: Brexit

Very few countries understand hot water suet pastry. France understands the concept of "cold meat in a pastry wrapper", but while the meat texture is OK, the pastry isn't. I have enjoyed some exceptionally delicious patés en croute, and the pastry has been good. Not, it's true, actual hot...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lobster

Do you remember the huge picture of a cow defecating on the wall of his lab? It was there for years. The picture I mean - not the cow. I do. I believe it was a rather simple representation of the nitrogen cycle, but the only memorable bit (for the likes of us) was the pile of poo. We were well acqu...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lobster

The 'tickling stick'? Surely it was 'Tickle-toby'? Indeed it was! Until you mentioned the name Toby, the whole "tickling stick" thread meant nothing to me - just another feature of Housey life that I had forgotten, or never been aware of. But yes, I certainly recall Tickle Toby as somethi...

Re: Dorm Raids

In the late 40s and 50s, not only were Dorm raids totally unknown, but entry into the passage between the two houses of the same block was forbidden and I am not aware of any who disobeyed this rule. I agree with Richard and Sejintenej. As long was I was there (up to 1962) those passages were prett...

One morning the pedal was removed and put on the other side! He had to walk back to the House. ... I'm suspicious of the bicycle pedal story as the pedal have opposite thread. Swapping the chain from one side to the other might have been possible, but more complicated and would have taken longer. I...

But John, you must remember the loud racket that used to come out of the left hand monitor's study when we were trying to study!!!! I suspect that you were a little further away from it than me. That may well be true, David. I can't even remember who was in that study - except for my last year, whe...

"Never touch a younger boy ..." -I don't think I ever heard him say that, but it certainly was commonly believed to be a Kit quote. We all understood that his missing leg was a war wound, but we didn't have a clear idea of where or how it had happened. Tanks and D-day were mentioned, but t...
