Re: All Out!
I have to agree with you, Angela, that sport at CH - although my least favourite thing - was never absolute hell. That is, once Mrs Hislop left at the end of our first year; she always Had It In For Me as a result of a mix-up with a floating lesson, as reported elsewhere on this forum... Miss Westth...

Re: All Change Miss Tucker?
My memories of Miss Tucker's first year are actually quite positive: she seemed relatively human and had some knowledge of the Outside World! Scary, huh? Get this: shortly after her arrival she invited all of us prefects together with the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe (I remember them as a thre...

Re: Aqua Manda
Oh yes, I most certainly do! The whole place could smell like a Siberian forest in seconds (or a public lavatory, depending on your point of view...). For some reason, unfathomable to everyone else, I was not a fan of Top of the Pops so when that was on on a Thursday evening (can't imagine why we we...

Re: HAPPY HERTFORD!
Yes, I tend to agree about the summer terms being rather better than the others (how my un-Mallory Towers heart used to sink when I saw the hockey nets go up...). I do remember, however, having to go out on the field on one particularly baking hot Sunday afternoon, despite protestations that I had a...

Re: The School Rules
I had a piano teacher in my last year - I think her name was Beryl Terry - and she had, indeed, "leapt over the wall". However, I remember her telling me on more than one occasion that sometimes working at CH felt as if she'd leapt right back in again! Talking of music teachers - does anyo...

Re: The School Rules
Oh, those ghastly walks! And the poor staff who had to accompany us! I always thought that this must have been their punishment for crimes committed in the staff room etc - not washing up cups in the approved manner, leaving a pile of books misaligned with the edge of the desk, a hair grip askew - s...

Re: The School Rules
I think the destination of That Bus was Bishop's Stortford. Which would explain it. There was one, too, I remember that went from Horsham, where I lived, to Guildford. Need I say more?

Compulsory Games...
This may have been dealt with under other topics but since it is a subject which figured hugely in almost every day of my CH life, I thought I'd give it a thread all of its own! Games were never my forte anyway but having arrived at CH and being put into the 3rd form, thus missing out on the final y...

Re: The School Rules
Goodness, yes, I do remember the Susan Parkin Affair now you come to mention it, Angela. Oh, the vicarious thrill, echoes of which I can still feel coursing through my veins as I write! That's really set me up for the day! You're probably right about the reason for the PO bar - current Health & ...

Re: The School Rules
Miss Tucker was really pretty reasonable: she even let us stay up after 9.30pm, on account of us being 18!! (She'd taught in a day school so was a bit more aware of what the modern gal did!) I recall once using the official prep time to play the piano (the effrontery!) and was discovered by the Miss...

"Hair must clear the collar." In one jump? "Girls must not slide downstairs on tin trays." Melamine ones ok? "Pot plants on lockers must be placed on saucers." I remember the rule but I can't recall anyone actually having the temerity to try introducing a pot plant to t...

Re: TWO deaths : Betty Jukes and Jean Taverner
Haven't looked at this forum for a week or two and just read about these two deaths in the Old Blue email. Another bit of childhood gone! My abiding memories of Miss Jukes concern my misdemeanors, of course. The first one that comes to mind happened one evening when she was on duty in the house (1's...
