Re: Elizabeth Cairncross
An indicative story. Sometime in the mid 80’s rice pudding was served to the school. Almost in unison there was a groan of surprise from the tables. The reason? Salt had been used instead of sugar. It was inedible. For 850 people. No form of tasting or quality control had been done between pantry an...

Re: Elizabeth Cairncross
I have recently heard that some boy squits were deliberately withheld food and had to go begging from girls' tables. I can confirm this. It happened to me as well as at least one other poster on this forum. I lived on milk and toast. I would enter weird dreamlike states every evening before bedtime...

Re: Obituary Old Blue Ted Kenney – and his Fufu test for college applicants
Well, if I was the Dean and learned that one or my tutors was selecting students on the basis of their response to a cat on a chair, I'd have sacked him. It was the treasurers of this period that nearly bankrupted the school. Seeing as we chose to hire cat-loving classicists I find it hard to unders...

Re: THE AVENUE
285 deg seems about right. In a similar vein, the school is right on the corner of Gatwick controlled airspace - surface to flight-level ridiculous. So for a generation of aviators it’s been a useful marker to avoid terse words from the controller. The Water Tower really does stand out for miles aro...

Was Spam spiced? If it was, Mrs Keeley managed to boil that out of it before it got to the table.

Re: Bishop Ball documentary BBC2 2100 TONIGHT
I was something of a night walker, quite often poking around in the dark hours. There were some fascinating places to explore and security was appalling. If I remember correctly the only places I didn’t get into - over time - were the Wardrobe and Armoury. Everything else I explored on moonlit night...

Re: Ken Grimshaw
I remember you as running one of the most repressive junior boy’s houses regimes even by 1980s standards, such that by the time MaB boys went to MaA and into the arms of Crud they were desperate to be feral. And were. So. Did you know that the Senior Management Team were incompetent and so ran MaB l...

I also owe an A Level to Neil Simms. A great guy who - by virtue of what he taught - sadly I only encountered in my last few years. Also, like Vikki Askew and APFA, one of the few teachers I find myself still admiring after the passage of many years. I particularly admired his laconic and reasoned c...

"Christ's Hospital I despise and fear more than I despise Eton or fear Winchester. Eton and Winchester merely perpetuate privilege; Christ's Hospital creates it." Not the first time I’ve heard that. It’s rather chilling... Our in-house loony will be along shortly to tell you why you’ve mi...

Re: Did anyone know?
No. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that there was institutional awareness of these things, such that, on occasion, a blind eye was turned. In at least one case the victim was silenced. It’s not enough to make the assumption that things have changed, that there are fundamentally nicer people...

Re: Politics
By the way, why is the CH Unofficial website suddenly getting lots of ads for exotic eastern ladies looking for husbands? Do they suspect that the English boarding school turns out loads of repressed, inhibited chaps who would welcome a bit of oriental fun and games? Er, because it is picking up on...

A horrifying prospect that the BSB may have to change its mission to be supporting victims of, er, the school itself. Way to go Horsham..robert totterdell wrote: ↑Mon Jul 29, 2019 11:14 pm ...Or should the victims just make a formal request to the BSB (Benevolent Society of Blues). For that matter do the victims even know that the BSB exists?

The plain: " A Royal, Religious and Ancient Foundation ". I hate this one. What’s the value in being ancient? It means ancient values, ancient diligence, an arrogance that nothing needs checking, and an inertia to do smart things. How about, ‘Christ’s Hospital: if you survive seven years ...
