Re: St Matthew’s Day
Actually, St Matthew’s Day was the first time that I came to realise that there was such a thing as a mixer-sized can for fizzy drinks. The Corporation of London was so hard up that it couldn’t run to a normal can and so we all got the teeny-weeny cans.

20p. And a whole lot of standing around.
The really profitable gig was selling programmes for the Lord Mayor’s Show. That was nearly £50 and about 1/2lb of tobacco.

Re: Amelia White (in the Daily Mail) deplores her CH years
I went from Aston Webb’s CH to Aston Webb’s BRNC and they were spookily similar, except that at the time BRNC (Hawke Division at least) was quite well looked after whereas I vividly remember how tired and jury-rigged the boarding houses at Horsham were. Now it’s Dartmouth hitting the news for being ...

I remember her, sad to read the backstory.

Re: Richard Poulton has died
It seems fitting that his passing is recorded in this sub forum on the abuse cases. The school has since closed the hyperlink to the original statement it made after Dobbie’s conviction. But it did say at the time: “it is clear that abuse at Christ Hospital was enabled not only by the perpetrators w...

Re: Opinions on the recent ‘Final Band Parade’ Videos
As I reflect, I think it’s remarkable that we bestowed so much ceremony on receiving such dreadful food (in the time of Mrs. Keeley, mass-poisoner). ISTR much worse transgressions than this in my time. We started one band parade under the Big School arches and ‘buzzed’ the band. PeA stopped opposite...

Re: Opinions on the recent ‘Final Band Parade’ Videos
The less martial pageantry the better IMHO. I can see the value of doing it say, once a week, but it was a chore doing it daily.

Re: Freaky returns to Sussex (by the sea)
I've posted elsewhere about how our housemaster in the 50s called the recently pubescent pupils in to his study to warn us about homosexual liaisons, it being illegal at the time. I remember how many fancied other housemates but were all paranoid about turning out gay - which then could be the kiss...

Re: Freaky in the FT
As for one's interactions with those who supported Brexit and those who voted to remain, it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify the former group as they have gone so very quiet (including on this forum)! Within my (extended) family, as far as I know it was only a small number of the elde...

Re: Puke Fight!
I've commented on this before, but I would be interested to see if any of my peers would think that I'm looking back through rose-tinted spectacles. I have no recollection of this sort of thing going on in the 60's. Rigid hierarchy, yes. But physical punishment by monitors had been banned the year ...

Unfortunately no it cannot. In order to obtain access to it, I had to approach the trial Judge, Christine Henson QC and state my reason. The reason I gave was that I wished to investigate her fitness for a role as Chair of Governors at Salisbury Cathedral School. I undertook not to distribute the t...

Re: Freaky in the FT
I for my part feel slightly differently; I shall not let Brexit be bygones. I don’t accept the vote. Mendacious people motivated by their own gain swayed an electorate through deceit and false promises. The result will render Britain irrelevant in the years to come and its people (including my child...

Re: Freaky in the FT
I’m not one to generally pull people up on their spelling but it’s generally ‘Fuhrer’. The reason I do so on this occasion is that it suggests that you aren’t exactly boned up on things Germanic but sufficient to have a rather jaundiced view of Frau Merkel? I have a number of German friends who woul...
