Re: TALES FROM SHAKESPEARE

I was given the book as a school prize from primary school, but it took me years to link the author to the name of a house at Horsham. I almost certainly didnt know the Horsham house names. The names of our Wards (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) I always found singularly unimaginative.

Re: SIR BARNES WALLIS

I re-read your Barnes Wallis memory Katharine. I remember those mirrors too. He came to Hertford and spoke about VTOL at the same assembly. He brought along models and was quite dismissive of Concord (I think it was under development at the time). For some unknown reason he seemed to take an interes...

Tennick was her maiden name. 3's. Same year group as you and I. Sciences A levels.

So sorry to hear this. Angela and I were contemporaries in 3's. Unfortunately we lost touch after school.

Re: teaching relevance in later life

You are right Katharine - absolutely no carteers advice at Hertford. In addition our external exam results were sent to us by post with no follow up or support in any way. This is in stark contrast to the help that students receive now, both at CH and elsewhere.

Re: Herts Memories

You are right, Lesley was in 4's.
We wore Judys in junior wards. They were disappearing when I arrived in '58. They were flowery and a slightly darker blue than zephyrs.

Re: Herts Memories

Yes. I was sad that I could remember so few names but so many faces. Ruth, Joe Sutton, Caroline Scott sprang out with names to faces but I need to think hard about some others. The picture of Ruth in a zephyr brought me up short. I remember zephyrs and judys before we went over to skirts and blouses...

Re: Herts Memories

You need to add Sussex University to the list of places DR didnt let us apply to. Much too "fast" for her taste I think.

Re: Re-educated by Lucy Kellaway

I moved into teaching when I was 40. I then taught in inner city comprehensives until I retired. I saw more quality teaching than I ever experienced at CH. The best teachers were leagues ahead of the worst teachers at CH. The pastoral care system was well developed and well intentioned - in stark co...

Re: Dorm Raids

My mind boggles at the very thought! I presume the boarding houses were locked at night, but I can’t honestly remember. Katherine, I distinctly remember climbing out of the dorm window (having previously lubricated it with "marg", carefully saved from tea.) and then down the escape ladder...

Re: Writing letters home

I broke the rules and posted a letter on the way to Ashbourne - got a "conduct" for my trouble and wasn't allowed to see my parents on Long Sat. I thought that a bit unfair on my parents - they had no money and had travelled to Hertford by train. A bit tangential but - we had "all out...

Come on Katharine, you must remember the thinnest possible slice of ham for Sunday breakfast! We never did figure out why there was always a green sheen to it.
