Re: Pranks in Chapel
'Jape' and 'prank' feel like the same and, as mentioned, 'practical joke' feels like being much the same also. I guess the splendid law quoted above was in response to affray, which would include heckling of the type us merry pranksters finked out of, and did not refer only to discomfitures such as ...

Re: Pranks in Chapel
All these positive waves! Beautiful! * Is most of stuff like this, peculiar to times long gone by. Did it all spring from a turbid pool of represssion and anarchy bubbling up in the 1960s. Or are there planty of such stories before and since. It would be good to know. There are I suggest differences...

Re: Pranks in Chapel
Such positive waves! Beautiful! But so far I am reminded of Crocodile Dundee. You call those pranks... Here is a prank! Three pranks. Any mistakes or omissions here, please correct. In my day and I guess in those of others on this thread, my house Peele A was sat at the end of the chapel immediately...

Two errors in my last, apologies. (1) Ernesto Geisel.(2) I should have said he was one of the least worst military regime presidents.

What a great site this is. Up there with the best discussion sites. Richard (Slingfield). Go for it! Sejintenej (David Brown). Greetings. Is 'inward pms' short for 'personal motives', or what... If so sounds OK to me, and see below. Now, Britain and Brazil ... no no me being here is not homage to Mi...

Re: Michael Cherniavsky
Richard Slingfield says that most of the contributions to this website are inconsequential. So they are, but this is good. The meisters of the site have done a phenomenal job of creating space for so many hundreds of Old Blues to chat and sometimes to renew acquaintance. Also let's celebrate the con...

Re: grace
Michael Scuffil and jhopwood are correct, at least at the time when they and I were at CH. As soon as you became appointed as a Grecian you were in line to say Grace. It was not common to become a Grecian before the age of 17 when you got your Buttons, but it happened. I remember. This was my case. ...

Re: Michael Cherniavsky
PS Some of my latest post repeats bits in my first post of last year. I should have mentioned this, plus my repenting of the use of 'Cherny'. Michael (Scuffil) you said I edited The Listener. Not quite. I designed The Spectator for Nigel Lawson, and then The Listener for Karl Miller, and then went o...

Re: Michael Cherniavsky
What a fine website. Here is some more about Michael Cherniavsky (with thanks for kind words already posted). What’s here is intertwined with thoughts on the period beginning in 1956 when his genius was able to flourish, for more reasons than occurred to me when I began to write. Cometh the times, c...

Headmasters: Oswald Flecker
Geoffrey Cannon, Peele A 1951-1958 I would also like to suggest contributions on headmasters by name. Hope this doesn't sound formalistic Oswald (HLO) Flecker. After Hamilton Fyfe he was the great early Horsham period headmaster. It must have been hells difficult to run a big public school at a time...

Geoffrey Cannon. Peele A 1951-1958 History Grecians. Balliol, Oxford I am a new boy - second contribution. Written with a sense of due diffidence. In general I am surprised that there is not a lot of continuous contribution within this truly wonderful website, on specific teachers (masters as we cal...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob
Bah! I see that my contribution puts me down as a second former. Does this refer to boys who were slung out after being in the Prep School? First parting button Grecian, per-lease! History, exhibition to Balliol College. Further to the remark about CH academic prowess, when I went up there was someb...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob
This is Geoffrey Cannon, now resident in Brazil Peele A 1951-1958, and this contribution is about Uncle. The title of this sequence of items I guess is from somebody who remembers 'Bill' Kirby from after he retired (or was 'retired'). He influenced me at a time when he was extremely vigorous. My sen...
