Pre-Entrance Medical Examinations

Do would-be Houseyboys and Houseybints still have to undergo a gruelling stark-naked medical examination before being deemed Fit For Purpose? Or has that particular treat been done away with, along with plank beds, thirty-man dormitories and gruel? Personally I hated my medical examination. When I t...

Re: 'Fudging'

I've a feeling that back in my day the post of Sicker Clerk was a fixture as a Lamb B house trade (or maybe it was a Lamb trade). I used to wonder quite how the Sicker Clerks' feet even touched the ground between post-breakfast bed-making and arriving at the Infirmary, especially as they'd probably ...

'Fudging'

And now I'm wondering whether the word 'fudging' is still used, meaning pretending to be ill or injured. That's to say, trying to fool a matron or the school doctor into believing that one is unwell so as to sidestep this, that or the other. And be honest, did you ever have a shot at 'fudging' yours...

Re: When You're A Ghost, Which Parts of CH Will You Haunt And Why?

Dave, believe me, I didn't envisage terrorising pupils and staff as part of the job description for haunting (though JR will doubtless opt to terrify small children in the Tube). I'm merely anticipating a state of disincarnate existence which would allow one to drift to any location one's thoughts m...

Re: When You're A Ghost, Which Parts of CH Will You Haunt And Why?

Oliver, Wapplegate (or alternatively Wopplegate) is that area of sports pitches next to the cinderpath, i.e. the dead straight driveway-cum-footpath linking Big Side with Two Mile Ash. You'll probably now tell me that Wapplegate has been given a fearsomely naff new name - likewise the cinderpath - o...

When You're A Ghost, Which Parts of CH Will You Haunt And Why?

I think I'd probably haunt the old Library and the Dominions Library next door. I didn't often go into them, but I rather liked them on the rare occasions I did stray in there and of course they overlook the Garden Quad and who didn't like that?. Possibly I'd also haunt the entire length of the Aven...

Re: Col A photos 1970's

Well remembered Karl - what house were you in? I was in a sort of Wendy house, mate. Glancing at the 1975 Col A photograph again, the full cast list is: Back row (l-r): Nigel Moran, Peter Larking, Simon Oecken, Peter Cullum, David Hoskins, Adam Coleman, Mark Lindsay-Bayley; Second row: Mike Mitchel...

In the 1973 photo, the front row line-up is (l-r): Bill Olver, Jo Bryant, Grant Keir, Duncan McCallum, Mark Coleman, Stuart Pryle, Ian Weatherhill, Andrew Ashe, Nigel Harrison. In the 1974 photo, front row is Peter Boys, Mark Wyatt, Mike Mitchell, Clive Thompson, Simon Gillespie, Les Blohm, Martin G...
