Re: Memorable Sermons

I only remember one. Mr Aldridge, the RS teacher decided the best topic for a sermon was the allegorical nature of Star Trek. Surprisingly it went down quite well, not least because his shaggy hair, beard and glasses made it seem perfectly natural for him to be preaching on the subject. My most mem...

Re: Your nickname

My old nicknames...I used to be called "Brickwall" on the rugby pitch, due to my rather impactful, and early onsetting puberty making me quite dangerous. :P Off of it, everyone called me either "Cuencs", or "Leroy", on account of my overly confident, slightly clumsy and...

It was expedient that a boy and her left the premises.
WOW, seriously?
I believe the proper term is a "lad". And as for the maid? She's what we call a "lad"y. :P

Re: Domestic Maids

Yeah, there's still cleaners in all the houses, but they aren't uniformed. And they didn't do any of the fancy stuff like clean our coats or anything. But still, they make things all nice and shiny, even if us students had to do various trades in the evening to clean up again after they'd left, beca...

Re: Pocket-Money at CH.

Well, in the late 2000s, it was somewhere around £20 a term recommended. Which was very easy to squander in the tuck shop, so Tezzer only allowed us juniors in Maine B to take out a pound or so at a time to make it last. And then later, that was removed from us, so we could take out any amount. And ...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

Reverting to the original topic: Do pupils still say "Quis?" "Ego!" or was all that stuff left behind in the days of Jennings & Darbishire, Billy Bunter and yours truly? Yes indeedy, they still use Quis and Ego. Everyone's pretty cautious about it, cos everyone suspects that...

Re: Masters' Nicknames

Well, considering that a lot of these are current, on account of my recency of having left, I suppose this is a bit edgy. But hey, what can you do. "Fingers" O'Regan (Supposedly got that whilst in his uni rowing team, god knows why) Terry "Tezzer" Whittingham. (What a guy!) Dr &q...

Re: SPECIAL NEEDS AT CH

What I thought was particularly bad was that the school seemed to be exploiting people like Sarah (who really was straight As all around) and is probably driving a lot of people over the edge. They want good grades, so they keep pushing the ones who are capable until they get results, without caring...

Re: Buglers

Buglers played on many evenings for tea parade between 1948 and 1955. We used to take it in turns. Francis Warner and I think one of the Ind brothers were particularly adept at swinging some of the calls. I was occasionally allowed to join them on trumpet. The mouth- piece on a bugle is most uncomf...

Re: Newspapers

I remember Maine B was very much a Guardian/Independent sort of house. Fairly middle of the road politically, with a slight lean to the left in some areas. They used to get dropped off at the side door between us and the Housemaster's house, whilst Maine A's got dropped off in Centre Hall. Naturally...

Re: SPECIAL NEEDS AT CH

As an Old Blue who left this year, I can honestly say that there's pretty much nothing in place for anyone with special needs or mental illness. Of course, the school tends to turn down most people who apply and have been diagnosed with one, but unfortunately there are naturally people who aren't, a...
