Re: The Old Blue 2018

Landed through my letterbox this morning. I actually think it's racist. If you're black it's patronising and condescending, if you're not it's discriminatory. We all know that the ethos of the school is about helping disadvantaged kids. It's inevitable that this will result in above average numbers ...

Re: Sharks

When the painting was sold, the school had a copy made, which hung in the entrance to The Court Room which is where Maine used to eat. It held me in awe during my first year at CH since 1975 was the year that the film Jaws was released. Since I am in Washington next month I look forward to looking f...

Re: The Great Fire

Thanks for the heads up, I've just watched Episode 1. Quite interesting, particularly the bit about the shoemaker Sibbil Theame. I have in my possession one of her rather rare trade tokens which I managed to obtained on eBay. A rather naughty lady it would seem, it didn't tell me that in Mike Barfor...

Allegations of abuse in today's news

Oh dear ... Police have arrested three former members of staff at a top boarding school on suspicion of historical sex abuse against pupils. The men, all aged in their 60s, were arrested in an investigation into events at Christ's Hospital in Horsham, West Sussex. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...

Re: What happens to ‘retired’ Housey coats?

Re Kit Bartlett's reminiscences, in the 1950's we also had two coats issued but I can't remembr where the second was kept. ISTR we had it for the London parades, at the end of summer terms and maybe Speech Day. I remember that in my early years at the start of each year I received last year's "...

Re: Roger Wilson RIP

Sad news indeed. He was a fine housemaster. I think he left CH after my first year in Peele A, which would have been 1979/80. Although my memory for all things CH is very poor these days. What I do remember, and with immense fondness, is being entertained by the Wilsons on Sunday evenings, playing c...

Re: BROADIE BUCKLES

Almost any street market or craft shop would sell leather belts of the right size and colour. You'd just have to cut the existing buckle off and trim the end. I thought about that, but my memory of the girdle is that it is very different to what is generally available. I don't recall any of the emb...

Re: BROADIE BUCKLES

Picking up on this old thread, I still have my old broadie buckle and have recently acquired the Samuel Travers buckle pictured in my avatar. It must be a very rare find indeed. This Travers maths prize buckle was presented to Wm R. B. Briscoe in 1868 who gets a mention in Ken Mansell's book as a fa...

Do you mean the boy holding the cup?

I thought he was wearing Housey uniform at first, but he's got black tights on.

Re: Old broadie buckles

I bought my own broadie buckle, and still have it. But I have no idea how much it cost, how I came to buy it, or where from, or even if there was any choice. I wish I could remember.

I recently acquired an old Travers Buckle on eBay, which is now my avatar. :)

Holly Walsh was a guest on the always entertaining Museum Of Curiosity on Monday, and the school gets quite a bit of a mention.
