Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

Last night's ITV documentary by Alex Renton showed up the reluctance of the boarding school authorities and bodies like the Independent Schools Couuncil to allow these scandals to spread too widely. Offenders were allowed to quietly leave and in some cases were still given references for jobs at oth...

Re: Politics

Yo! Our splinter group Sisters Uncut have just invaded the red carpet at the BAFTAs and held the proceedings up for a while, just as they did at the premiere of Suffragette. So the posh, smooth, privately educated La Lumley had to put her silly speech on hold for a while.

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

That sounds a bit cryptic John. Hope things aren't going to be too bad.

Re: UK’s Top Schools - where’s CH?

Unfortunately these league tables never seem to measure how many decent, responsible, socially concerned people may emerge from particular schools. But I imagine that sort of measurement would horrify today's Tory party and particularly the likes of Michael "Gradgrind" Gove.

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

On one occasion that I know of the activities certainly were notified to the parents by letter. This was in the Seaman era. I wonder if these antics are described as peccadilloes because they so often seem to involve someone's pecker? Sexual abuse seems to be, er, popping up everywhere these days. O...

What should you expect from a busar? A few rounds of drinks presumably.

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

Chrissie Boy makes some interesting points about master/pupil relations and bragging rights in terms of sexual experience. In his diaries Evelyn Waugh records a liaison which was uncovered at his boarding school and observes that the reputation of the pupil concerned would not have stood any scrutin...

Re: Politics

Right on cue with my comments about firms decamping to the EU, up pops the Japanese Ambassador with a warning that if their car companies don't get the single market and the customs union they will have to decamp. Only this chilly, xenophobic, inward-looking little island's proximity to the biggest ...

I had him for Maths and Science in the mid-50s. Sadly these weren't my subjects but he was understanding of my shortcomings and didn't give me too hard a time. The Grauniad is usually pretty good at sports obits but he hasn't featured yet. He formed a famous centre partnership with Jeff Butterfield...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

One of the things that I remember from the 50s was just how long this kind of groping stuff went on without anyone reporting it - to parents or the authorities. One instance that I remember was in the Prep house (not massively serious but still attempts at mild groping) and that had been going on fo...

Adding to Michael Scuffil's piece on the customs union, our local paper here is big on potential problems at Dover. We here in Gravesend are at the other end of the county but news from southern Kent often makes the headlines and not for the first time are they having kittens in Dover about the hold...

To avoid answering difficult questions the Maybot has her software engineers implant a new set of platitudes into her brain for every new phase of Brexit. Thus,"Brexit means Brexit" and "A red white and blue Brexit" have long been discarded and I've no doubt a new set of meaningless cliches are alre...

No, there's only one D Silk (well I think so anyway) - ex-CH, ex-county cricketer and ex-Warden (ie headmaster) of Radley College (Peter Cook's old alma mater). You can see him in his full glory, if that's the word, in two documentaries on You Tube: "Radley College, BBC documentary in several parts"...

Re: CH and Psychiatry

We have to remember that many conditions have been medicalized (for good or ill, I'm making no judgement) in the last 40-50 years, whereas then they were all part of life. There were certainly people I knew who would probably now be diagnosed as having bipolar disorder, others who were borderline a...
