Re: Book about the history of CH?

A very interesting book on the first half-century of the school is: Christ's Hospital of London, 1552-1598: "A Passing Deed of Pity" by Carol Kazmierczak Manzione (Hardcover - May 1995). The author is a USA professor of history who did thesis work at Cambridge and the result is this detail...

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue

Merely opinions. They are all much better than the 1960s flats; in my opinion.

Re: Is this fair?

(if, of course, things are actually what they seem.) I have been involved in several such issues over my term as a governor and things have never been quite so and in my personal experience the school has gone to great lengths to be fair and understanding once ALL the facts are in. There is a notice...

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue

In an effort to provide some history on this issue the houseparents housing project started due to Peter Southern's concern with the disparity between the accommodations of the 10 houses that had integral and good housing for the houseparents and their families and the 8 that did not. This was causi...

Re: BBC Radio 4

You are right. Sir (William) Linton Andrews attended CH after Hull Grammar and went straight into journalism from school.

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue

I believe that the contrast between the 10 houses that had good accommodation for houseparents and the 8 that just had the flats was giving the then headmaster, Peter Southern, difficulty in attracting the best candidates to the 8 and also causing others to want to move from the 8 to the 10 which he...

Re: Middleton Reunion

Sorry I'll miss you. I gather the numbers have to controlled since Mid B are included and the school has trouble handling ~150 people. The last Mid A reunion had about 75 apparently.

Re: Middleton Reunion

The reunion is on Oct 8th starting at 10.30. I believe it includes those in the house in 1965 and earlier in part because that covers all those who contributed to the Mid A Fund, a major contributor the cost of the new houseparents' accommodations. Since you were in the house in '65 I think you shou...

Re: Charitable status of independent schools

There ought to be little doubt that CH is a charity in the true sense of the word. In the 2007 school year parental contributions were 14% of the cost of running the school and in 2006 they were 16%. It is true that many of the pre-Victorian public schools were originally charitable in practice but ...

Re: Were 19th century Grecians known as the Upper 4th?

Katherine is correct. If you went into full time tertiary education you could get a deferment. Several of my slightly younger friends did that and were lucky, in their view, that national service had ended before they left university so they never did it. I got deferment but after 2 years found an o...

Re: Were 19th century Grecians known as the Upper 4th?

In 1816 according to the Ackermann book of that year there were just Grecians (4) and Deputy Grecians (9) and no mention of other names for those forms. When I left the Prep in 1942 it went 3rd, LF, LE, UF, GE, DG, G. Up to and including GE there seemed to be 5 or 6 classes to each form labelled A,B...

Re: CH and Cambridge University

I recently bought at auction a history of the public schools by Ackermann 1816 that has a chapter on CH. There are 3 references relating to Cambridge in it and I have scanned all the pages into .pdfs. If you wish I can send you the pages by email. I have no idea how to put them in this medium. Jack

non-poster

I will try to answer Phil's question as a person who posted 7 times since joining in Nov 2004. As has been noted 54 people have posted more than 100 times and they seemed to me to form a group that really chat with each other with a familiarity that is interesting to observe but hard to break into a...

I left in 1948 with a prayer book and bible printed on "utility paper" but still nicely bound in leather. No boxes. They sit together on a bookshelf and are rather crammed with memorials of friends long gone.

I left at 16 and am not sure why I was given both.

1951-1953 RAF Padgate, Digby grading school, Kirton-in-Lindsey basic training, then Canada for 10 months of flight training. Back to England to learn about lousy weather. Out in December 53.

Really loved it but not enough to want to stay in. Have been flying ever since.
