Re: Films at CH, 1956-1960
M. L. G. = Modern Language Grecians, E. G. = English Grecians These Vivas were for A level, I think, not Oxbridge. Whole Holiday = A day in the summer term when all could go into the countryside for the day (ca 09h00 - 17h00). Destinations were cleared with the senior housemaster before departure. ...

Re: Edward Malins
I understand that EGM spent a year in the USA very soon after WW2 and returned with his American wife, whose nickname was Mitzi. They had two daughters. He had taught at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. For some years following we had a final year import from that school. Can anyone confirm...

Re: Nell Todd painting for sale
Although it’s good to hear of the appreciation for some CH teachers, I fully agree with sejintenej. The praises for Nell Todd’s devotion to her teaching and inspiration were not what happened to me at all. I wonder if my time in her art classes was an exception or if it reflected frequent experience...

Re: The End of Marching in to Lunch?
Without commenting further on the proposed change, would not an appropriate reaction be for some respectable body of Old Blues, or others, to approach the “Current Leadership Team” politely and respectfully and to enquire how the proposed change will “Improve the School Day”? When a response has bee...

Katharine wrote I think in mid-sixties everyone got their tuition paid by the local council This was not so. There were at least two other ways then of financing university expenses (including living costs and a book allowance). They were: 1. A State Scholarship, provided by the national government,...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?
Tush (Sgt Usher) sometimes supervised House Baths (recreational swimming, that was voluntary and considered desirable by most - do they still exist?) and also some house gym sessions. He was kind and when time was up and he blew his whistle to indicate all had to leave the water, some bright sparks ...

Re: GRACE
As AMP wrote yesterday, It sounds like there was much more of an academic focus in those days. This was so in the second decade after the War. Several other elderly contributors have already made this point. (In one year in the early 1950s a dozen Oxbridge scholarships were won. Has this number ever...

Re: CH, Degrees and PPE (not the Coronavirus sort)
Some interesting and provocative points have been raised recently. In France some answers are offered. Rockfreak Wouldn't sixth form at a decent school (especially with teachers like Chern) or maybe a one-year top-up course at a uni (or even an old-fashioned style polytechnic) be enough for most peo...

Re: CCF alternative
In the 1950s, it was possible to avoid the CCF, but very, very few did this. The procedure was to apply with a declaration that one was a pacifist. Then there was an interview with the HM (Flecker and then Seaman) and that was that. Then there were perhaps 2 or 3 such ‘pacifists’ at CH. I only remem...

I supplement (and endorse) JR’s previous posting with the following amendments. The only bullying in HLOF's time was verbal and occasionally physical. [The word ‘slight’ is omitted.] I never heard of food being denied. It does seem things definitely got worse after my time [according to the Forum].

The following advice is good, for surely a visit to Bayeux will be a delight, LongGone refers to French accounts of England versus France battles; if he hasn't already he should go to Bayeux and see the story of the tapestry But LongGone need not go so far. The only full sized copy (the only copy of...

Re: Is private education overrated?
One can argue about how ‘progressive’ a ‘progressive’ income tax system is. One can compare percentages of income taxes in different countries at different income levels and this has been done. But what is more important is the salary divide. Now the most highly paid earn far more than the average, ...

Re: CH Non-Achievers at Cambridge,
I remember Hardy, who was excused participation in all physical activities. Since ‘Uncle’ Kirby affectionately nicknamed him ‘Hard hearted Hardy,’ I presume that he suffered from rheumatic heart disease, or something similar. Hence it’s not surprising to hear of his early demise. He was a most pleas...

Here are some additional memories of the eastern half of The Avenue during the late 40s and early 50s. In swimming Reynolds (MidB?) then held the record of 13.2 sec for one length (how many yards/metres?) of the old swimming baths (located not far from the station in former cowsheds and next to the ...

Re: REV PULLIN & THE OLD BLUE
After the Rev LF Whitfield’s C of E theological studies he became a member of a pacifist group. When he realised this group was a communist front, he became an Australian Army chaplain and chose to serve with a Commando Unit in New Guinea. He inherited the nickname ‘Windy’ from his predecessor Ba B ...
