Re: Miss Gracie, Matron in Maine in the 1960s?
Does anyone know the name of the matron who preceded her in Maine? I have a photo of her her sitting next to 'Doggy' Barker in probably 1962. For some reason my Mac will not let me post it here. ``when I click on the image icon it just says in the text. David Alexander Miss Hayward was matron in Ma...

Re: CHOBA Webinars
id anyone else sign up for any of the CHOBA webinars? I've enjoyed two of them, Bletchley Park and today on the Welchman-Turing Bombe, used to decode Enigma messages. I learnt a lot and may well sign up again if something catches my eye. Yes Katherine, I watched the one on the Bombe. Absolutely inc...

Re: Bring back proper rugby
I remember that field in Southgate where I worked briefly in the 50's. Cruising around on a moped during the lunch hour one day I noticed it, on Chase Side I think it was but may be wrong. I worked for a company headquartered in Tottenham within sight of the 'Spurs ground. (thought I'd throw that in...

Re: Was Rock 'n' Roll Banned at CH in the Fifties?
Interesting subject but straying a little off the core subject & digging deep into the memory cells, yes, Maine B had a house radio in the dayroom. I recall the occasion when it croaked its last crackle of Radio Luxemburg, the Goon Show or some such show. A new radio was duly ordered & when ...

Re: UNDERGROUND BUNKER
I remember what we referred to as a concrete "Pill Box", much as described by LongGone, in the woods overlooking the Arun from the west side about a mile or so from the station.

Re: Milk
As far as I remember, mid to late 1940's Prep.A & B gathered in the assembly hall for the mid morning milk break with Prewett's biscuits. Set-up courtesy Jack Hards & fellow bokker Wells (no relation). Some staff also in attendance I believe. No recollection of milk in dayrooms in those days.

Re: Old Blue Clearout
the small car that was manhandled during break in the 1/4 mile and wedged between 2 trees... I seem to remember that was an Austin 7 (the pre-war variant) belonging to to a junior master (maybe music?) and the man-handling was done, very easily, by Beaky Davies and a fellow Harlequin rugby player. ...

Re: Wendy Fryer
How many other CH masters married infirmary nurses? I can only think of one 'almost' example: Peter Brotherton called his marriage off at the last minute. An indecently late minute, in the view of many. Tom Keeley married dietician Belinda. William Philip Cathcart Davies ---------- He did his Natio...

Re: Maine B 1952
You are correct Michael, Carey was senior housemaster, until he left in 1953 to become headmaster of Bromsgrove. I also left in 1953 and, as far as I know, Peto took over at that time so it may well be a first. I remember Peto arriving on the scene at Maine B shortly after I came up from Prep B and ...
