JR
you are quite correct it was Rae. He was lethal with a piece of chalk. Seem to recall he was a halfway decent teacher too, but I never got the hang of mechanics.

Trades covered all the chores done in the House and in Hall. They included (amongst others) sweeping, cleaning the bogs, picking up litter, making toast, setting tables, serving food etc and etc. They were normally allocated on a per term basis by one of the monitors, who the oversaw that they were ...

Thanks - of course Rip Kirby and NellTodd. I was taught the art of cursive handwriting by Nell because my "art" was so bad. Won the writing prize as a result and was then punished by having to write out the inserts for all leaving bibles andprayer books for the next three years. If you lef...

Kit Aitken was one of the many "characters" at the school - I know if you were there in the late 50's you knew him and that bike of his. Who was the science master who was always doing things around the Science School, like boiling a sheep's head as I remember him doing outside during one ...

Horse-hair

At least they weren't shirts. Those mattresses and boards were in fact reasonably comfortable and we are now discovering the advantages of firm support while sleeping - thanks to the wonders of modern science. Agree that at least one is able ever after to sleep almost anywhere. Rebel - I did mean th...

Rebel, et al, I think very few male or female would list CH as the most happy days of their lives. The problem is that those years are desperately unhappy for everyone - it's known as growing up. Just more difficult to swallow without a family support group around. There is also no question that the...

You are supposed to have an "unknown gender" - perhaps in deference to your erstwhile Headmistress? Where in NAmerica? It's abit large. The boys from the 50's (of whom I am one) had a theory that the school deliberately put bromide in the kiff to stop them thinking "impure thoughts&qu...

I have driven all over Europe (literally), worked in every major city in Europe, lived in London, Paris, Geneva, Rome and Algiers (yes you heard) - and I CHOOSE to live in the US for all its many faults. The scenery is unparalleled for variety and quality, there are strretches of space you Europeans...

One of the few places I know where you can surf in the morning and ski all afternoon...graham is quite correct, this is a country of the most magnificent scenery. I look out onto a small mountain range (the Santa Monicas) that only top out at 4000 ft just over 1200 m I think. The Getty museum perhap...

It's surprising what comes crawling out of the memory banks.
No kidding - I'd rather not remember some of it though. Was not always happy, unlike our childhood summers which I KNOW were sunny.

I well remember Cherniavsky - I had him for history for a while. He was promoted to Housemaster of BaB - shock of curly hair and somewhat distracted manner. I believe he is now deceased. Nice guy. Man you go back....

It's good to see that the OB product can still debate God, booz and sexuality in essentially the same breath. I just read that less than 40% of beer sold in the UK is done through pubs. I do hope they are not dying, that would be a real tragedy. It is pubs that made England what it is. The previous ...

I remember Johnny Johnstone - he was in charge of the Air Corps for a time. Odd bloke and he fired me from the Corps as "incorrigible" - much to my delight.
