Miss Jukes

Not sure how Miss Jukes got into a thread on uniforms but . . . .(and re uniforms, the bloomers were called Harvest Festivals - all is safely gathered in . .) Miss Jukes was the only person who ever said a kind word to me or told me I was any good at anything, and so I became a Home Ec(Dom Sc) teach...

Masochist that I am - CH trained of course - I thought I'd look in here and - vanity vanity - found some references to my previous posts. I am reminded of the Monty Python sketch about who is worse off than whom, and I could fit in well there-as might Alexandra - re the things I endured - with obvio...

I went to the CD on Amazon - first time I'd heard Praise the lord for Our Foundation for more than 4 decades. It made me cry this time -mostly for what might have been, a feeling of loss. I didn't cry back then. Could hardly contain my joy. even though I didn't get the prayer book that went with the...

Sometimes I think I didn't go to the same school as all of you. Ermmm, you didn't! No-one on this thread, anyway.... Interesting concept. in practical/geographical terms of course I didn't - but in terms of what 'the school' means re CH, the foundation etc. I assume I did. Otherwise I suppose you d...

Sometimes I think I didn't go to the same school as all of you. Your experiences are so different. At Hertford we had to have haircuts that kept our hair above the ear line. If it came below that then we had to screw(sorry) it back behind our heads and put a rubber band on it so it stuck out in horr...

I looked in here out of curiosity only because everything said is so outside any experience we had - not a drop to drink so to speak - although of course there wasn't booze everywhere - I don't think even the staff had it - along with any other pleasures. Perhaps that's why they were so joyless. Get...

We couldn't apply to be a monitor. The position was used as a control feature by the ward mistress when I was at school. She used it as a tool for humilation - i.e.normally someone in a pool of seniors - upper/senior sixth girls would be chosen, but if she disliked you - as mine did me - she would a...

So I'm going to add my usual 'we had it worse than you lot so stop grumbling' bit. We had to march to breakfast at hertford, with no band, and having had a half hour of housework(household chores- cleaning, scrubbing etc.) plus prayers before even a cup (bowl) of tea. I have missed a career with Mon...

I liked Queenie Blench for some reason while fearing her at the same itme. She was always good for a laugh - used to turn people's desks over, throw chalk at us etc. and sor t of creep about the school. I still remember the Latin she taught me - Caesar's Gallic wars etc. Who says we can't learn thro...

Can't let this thread die!!!

Just been talking about founder's day at Hertford on another thread so was moved to post here.

The Founder's Day dance was no rave
All girls, and we had to behave
We danced with the staff
In our gym clothes (don't laugh)
Did our Founder King turn in his grave?

I've just realized that Margaret is older than I am so how come she wore her own clothes to FDay? I really can't remember that ever happening while i was at school. We never brought clothes from home.
I used to try to do something to get myself banned from it as a punishment but never succeeded.

I didn't initiate the book question, and back to uniforms if you wish.(there are a few limericks about them on the limerick thread.) But for the record, the book certainly does exist, and every quote is from it. If you don't believe me, I'm sure CH could get you a copy. I have one given me by anothe...

quotes

Well, you probably didn't mean to encourage more of the same (perhaps there should be a separate topic with quotes from this 'book') but I can't resist, being the bitter old girl(1950s) I have obviously turned out to be - although I am a survivor - thanks to a talent for comedy(you'd never have gues...

Half to Remember

I did make a comment some time ago. THe 'slim volume' -inexplicably called Half to Remember- should have been required reading - had it been written - before anyone decided to go to CH. The ignorance DR shows of anything to do with adolescent girls is mind numbing. It is inexcusable that someone lik...
