Re: Academic jargon

Most of the time I say nothing, but there are cases where the resultant misunderstanding can have unfortunate policy decisions. Certainly. My company had a case of this where London used a technical term and our New York office had a very different understanding of it. We were lucky in that we spot...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

I pondered TMFs comment about non-foundationers living in a gilded cage. On the face of it it makes sense but in lots of ways I think it is actually the opposite; at least I got to be away from the school in the holidays. I see what you're saying but I think I'm more inclined to agree with TMF. The...

Re: Academic jargon

When I was writing for the music papers in the 70s we were mostly influenced by the "new journalism" coming from America, particularly in Rolling Stone and Creem magazine from Detroit. Whether it was new journalism, postmodern, or just a load of fevered old cobblers off the top of our heads stoked ...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Well in my view a good education is a universal human right, expensive holidays and flash cars are not. Nor televisions, mobile phones, flash trainers, three pairs of shoes, dishwashers, central heating .......... Your education should not depend on who your parents happen to be or how much money t...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Personally I would ban these private schools altogether. That would force all the MPs who send curently send their kids to private school to fund state schools properly. Imagine if these parents who spend 30K a year sending there kids to CH, sent their kids to a public school and donated that money...

Re: The Governorship Of CH

The point about diversity is I believe critical as when writing this of the 15 Governors on the Council representing a 50/50 gender pupil split, only two were women. Of the balance, in background, one had a legal background, one had an interest in music but both that one and all of the others were ...

Re: Why a teacher DOES NOT have to report abuse

1. Of course, as you point out, there are no existing obligations. 2. Who gives a sh1t what other countries do! 3. Who argues against it? ... the perpetrators? 4. The "practical consideration" that the number of prosecutions will be increased and the number of such crimes will be reduced, either by...

, it is a criminal offence in Canada to drive past another vehicle which may possibly be broken down and not offer assistance France also - they wanted to prosecute the journalists / photographers at the Princess Diana crash site but decided that there were already adequate trained people present (...

Re: staff accommodation

I hit the brakes. It was Autumn and there were wet leaves and the camber was against me. I slid across the road into the other car (a visitor, rather than a member of staff) And the Triumph Dolomite's chassis was no longer in line! These things happen and there is not much one can do about it. Remi...

Re: staff accommodation

I did this by racing individual boys 3 times a day around the steeple chase course with the promise of a mars bar for an improved performance. Obviously this would now be banned for safeguarding reasons. Member of staff and boy in Shelley's Wood at the same time. On the principle that a person in c...

Re: Dobbie's departure

CofE or the Church of Rome are just as bad as each other as far as kiddy fiddling and mental abuse is concerned. I just can't go with this as an historian. Luther's marriage to Katharina van Bora, a former nun, paved the way for protestant and CofE priests to set an example to their congregation of...

Re: Returned mail

I expect to receive at least one valid (and multiple spam) item per day, sometimes more. I had a period of three months with not a single item was delivered so several times I went to the sorting office to ask and they confirmed that my mail was being correctly delivered. I posted a registered deliv...

Re: staff accommodation

Just out of interest, is this staff accomodation 'Grace and Favour ', or are costs deducted from salary ?? Under UK Tax rules you must pay for accommodation which you use. Of course this could be a specific deduction from salary. If you don't then the owner has to pay income tax on the rent which g...

Re: Annoying car man

As to the threatening notes on car windscreens in the lay-by, well if the lay-by is part of the public highway you are presumably entitled to park on it. I would be along to the local police with the notes as evidence to ask whether this constituted threatening behaviour. As JR says, this sounds if...
