Re: Politics

So how about letting Scotland be on the Customs Union side of the border? Scotland voted to remain in the EU, and would be happy with free movement of people and so on. I'd love it; charge every lorry to/from Scotland from/to Dover £50000 and our roads might improve. then of course there are charge...

Re: Politics

Teresa May's "deal" involves the idea of a frictionless border between Northern Ireland and (the Republic of) Ireland. That's a border between the European Customs Union and a territory outside the customs union. A lot of people (but not everyone who matters) seem to believe that a frictionless bor...

Re: Visiting the Tower in uniform

I suspect the Tower is not part of the City and under the Lord Mayor because it was Crown property. Just noticed this post to which I should have given a better reply. The TowerofLondon and the Liberties to the north are within the City of London. Annually the mayor of Tower Hamlets meets the Lord ...

Re: HUSBAND APPEAL ??

Look, I have said in other posts that I think victims ought, in cases of crimes against the person, be formally legally represented at all stages of the case against the accused. It is widely reported that in the English system, where they are not, victims often feel let down or left out. 2 very si...

Re: Politics

A situation devoutly to be desired, in my view. It might concentrate the minds of both sides if the EU or UN were patrolling the streets. That post is NOT helpful. I was home a few months ago and could well judge the mood about any influence from outside Stormont and London. It is still a city divi...

I can't quite believe that the Conservative and UNIONIST Party has set in train the break-up of the UK. Cameron & May may go down together as the worst ever PMs. Brexit is a narrowly English obsession.
That is what Brussels is demanding and UK trying to control

Re: Politics

Seeing the UK opted out of Schengen and the euro, the only major change in Europe to affect the UK since 1975 was the introduction of the Single Market on 31 December 1992 which allowed you to bring a carload of booze in from Calais unchallenged. That, I need hardly remind you, was imposed on the E...

Re: Identification.

attempt No 2 after CHForum on my laptop closed down! Loringa; what you describe seems a little OTT but generally OK -people here dislike change. In France you must carry ID - an EU ID card or for others a passport. I carried photocopies which were deemed acceptable with the proviso that if demanded ...

Re: Management knowledge of the Husband/Dobbie cases

Update. I have now heard from IICSA as per below: You are welcome to share your own observations of failings to protect children from sexual abuse during your time at Christ's Hospital by sending these to us in writing and we will make sure they are sent directly to the appropriate investigation te...

Re: Identification.

"Hang on a minute. I haven't lived in the UK for 14 years now, but are you all saying that there is still no such thing as a government issued ID card? When I first moved to the US, I didn't drive but it was incredibly easy to stroll to the local Department of Motor Vehicles and wait several hours ...

Re: Identification.

I suspect that it was not the idea of an ID card but the detail included which annoyed the population. I think you credit the population with far too much discernment. It was unpopular because it was new, far too European an idea, smacked of Big Brother and new . Wiser minds realised that we'd also...

Re: CH fundraising - a bit of a rant

I thought that Housey should have purchased St Bees in Cumbria when it went down last year. The South of England and London migrant communities seem to obtain most financial benefits. There are many areas of the deprived north where children might enjoy a boarding experience such as CH-but they con...

Re: The band leading the People’s Procession at the Cenotaph tomorrow

David- Thank you for encapsulating my thoughts on Remembrance Day. I too suffered bombs and machine guns whilst Father was away and regret the Circus that the Day has become. I notice that the Trot was improperly dressed for the occasion! I have only a few memories of WWII but most of the populatio...

Re: The band leading the People’s Procession at the Cenotaph tomorrow

However, my main grouse was that the traditional ceremonial event was carried by the BBC World Service TV only as a visual background to the informal live discussion on war histories. There was essentially no commentary or explanation as to what was happening at the Cenotaph, or who was doing what ...

Re: Matrons

Two of my year in Peele A went off to do VSO in 1960 - one to Sarawak, and the other to India, where he ended up more or less in charge of a huge refugee camp for Tibetan exiles who had come to India when the Dalai Lama left Tibet. Very much a case of being dropped in at the deep end! The Tibetans ...
