Sun? In HK? It's mostly hidden by the air pollution and the rain. To be fair, it is around 26/28C during the day but with 90% humidity much of the time. Sweaty.

Actually, the clock problem is not that much of an inconvenience, just one of those odd things that happen.

Summertime

Julian, I have just noticed a quirk in the magic clock that corrects for local time elsewhere in the world. It assumes that everywhere else adopts daylight saving time when the UK does. For those of us in the tropics where the clocks don't change it means that (a) we are getting ahead of ourselves a...

On our Founder King, girls' dances, immorality and dodgy rhyme:

At dances in Hertford
Young founder King Edward
Would not be allowed
To join in the crowd
And lead the girls bedward

It looks as though it is time to implement the adage of "follow the money" and investigate the directorships, shareholdings and other financial links of the key members of the Council of Almoners.

According to the original Charter, probably yes. However, I actually do agree with you about selection of the brightest and best. It's just that elitism seems to be a non-PC dirty word these days.

I guess limited disposable income is a start. Reverting to the original Charter, being a part of a single parent family is a pretty good criterion.

I am suddenly aware that I am being very candid in places That, surely, is one of the main points everyone is asking for... the money is managed by top Merchant Banks not cowboys! I'm not entirely sure that the two are mutually exclusive. However, isn't the tenor of this debate not how the income i...

It's probably not appreciated that CH was, in effect, taking full-fee-paying pupils over 50 years ago. The 1944 Education Act introduced what was a forerunner of the assisted places scheme. Based on the results of the 11+, local education authorities were allowed to send children who, it was thought...

and lack of ability to either understand or speak English
Is CH using immigrant labour these days? In the G.O.D. all we had to cope with was a broad Sussex accent, eminently speakable and understandable.
