Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree about the meaning of the phrase The Other Place, I’ve always understood it to be slightly derogatory, but perhaps that’s biased by being an Oxford graduate where it was derogatory about Cambridge. Anyone familiar with the film Withnail & I will know that the ...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

The girls that came to Horsham for the Quatercentenary were shown round by, I suppose selected, Grecians. The buzz was that, on passing the pillar box outside the Common Room, one of the girls asked 'Are you allowed to post things in that?' St Matthew's Day was the girls' only other manifestation f...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

At least it has sparked some other controversial conversation other than historic abuse at Horsham. Well, until next March that is, unless more charges appear on the sheet.

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

For Avon and to thank him for his PM regarding my quote of sexism, I'll just say that a teenage friend of mine went on to become a MP. (NO names, no...) We still meet up occasionly and chat. He recently told me the parliamentry term 'The Other Place' is intended to show disdain and dislike for the U...

Well done Ladies ! Nice to see you back on form.

Obviously, the merger was after my time, and thinking back, I can't really remember any references to Hertford other than it existed in Hertfordshire and was our 'opposite number'.

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

I t’s noteworthy that you saw IAPOTP as A Good Thing. I’d never really reflected on it that way until now, but I remember it well. As a young inmate, and after a brief spell of Baker (and being oblivious to his failings) Hansford felt like an icy blast from the 1950s; the punishments were indeed no...

Re: Thornton House Photos and Band, school teams etc.

I have a few photos from early 50s which may be of interest. However being computer illiterate I have no idea how to load on to this site. Can anyone help please. John Saunders Hi John. I'm sure if you sent them to our Illustrious leader, young Julian , he'd oblige for you. He has down-loaded my pi...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

"random punishments" which meant a dep caught with some home brew could get a harsher punishment than an LE caught legless on Vodka for the 2nd or 3rd time (not sure if that actually happened but the concept struck me as very unfair at the time) Just not true - this must be a urban (rural) rumour. ...

Re: Corporal Punishment by CH Teaching staff

What a pity. We shall never know what NTF wrote about his beatings. As NTF did what he thought fit, I can assure you I deserved the one beating administered by him. OKAY ? (RA) Hewitt delivered the other. What ever did happen to Hewitt ? aka Mr Halitosis. Dr Hewitt taught Physics in the 90s- probab...

Re: Corporal Punishment by CH Teaching staff

Some very interesting points of view TMF and quite right in my view. As one of the people who tried to locate the CH punishment books years ago and was unable to even establish their original existence, I also wondered at the extensive archives of CH documentation. I think someone at the time refer...

Wow, that's quite a coincidence that there are two Michael Porteouses (rare name) who are both roughly the same age and both employed in private schools...
Indeed. What a coincidence.

A photo, if possible, of the 2nd., (West Country) Porteous might be interesting.

Re: Hammer blows to CH finances

VAT on fees is ridiculous, so many families will be priced out of private education which would then put extra pressure on state schools with a sudden influx of pupils Charging VAT on education is a slippery slope- what about educational activities outside of school, what about university tuition f...
