Re: Explanation of the 'Tube'

On my last visit to CH, I asked if I could just pop down the tube for a quick look. NO, I was told. Why, I asked. Something to do with Health & Safety, I was told. Arr ! The good old Elf and Insanity ploy, I thought. Covers a multitude of sins. Not really unlike the present Three Wise Monkeys, or Os...

Re: Vikki Askew

Fun is good. Abuse is a crime. Not that I am suggesting for one minute that any named person is guilty of such. Would the site moderator care to explain his comments further? NO - Or in a response well embedded in my brain. NO COMMENT. Sorry Tim but Fun is mutual enjoyment without criminal offence ...

Re: Explanation of the 'Tube'

We were often allowed to use The Tube when it was raining to go to Dining Hall. There's no way it extended to Sharpenhurst! I didn't know about all the other passageways though. Hopefully someone can set up the occasional tour, it would be very interesting Highly unlikely though that would be good....

Re: Attitudes to sports

Sorry but I'm losing the track of this thread.

If we need to discuss modern day Stalinism then maybe we should be discussing Comrade Corbyn and Co.

Re: Vikki Askew

Think your keyboard '?' is stuck Tim, or maybe you've just nodded off.

Hey Ho. Matters not.

One well known private school is now still trying to hush up the 'accepted' tradition of seniors beating juniors with cricket bats.

I feel a Channel 4 documentary coming on.

Re: Vikki Askew

JR - I was just trying to say that Jonathan "Gripper" Davies - who was a colleague of mine for a very short time at CH - took a huge amount of time to make history FUN for his pupils ! Fun is good. Abuse is a crime. Not that I am suggesting for one minute that any named person is guilty of such.

Re: Vikki Askew

Was this Vikki Hatton before? I think she taugt me briefly Medieval History (at the same time as Husband  ) and had filled in for Gripper Davies who went to Cranleigh? Yes it was. Jonathan Davies went on to be Head of History at King Edward's Birmingham. His speciality was devising history re...

Re: Attitudes to sports

I think I may be repeating a story I have told on another thread but it is relevant here. As the Hertford girls' school was run down sports was a major casualty and the attitude to sport of the girls who arrived in 1985 was appalling. I remember umpiring a girls' house hockey match in the early day...

Re: Attitudes to sports

Talking of sport, oldies among us will remember the athletics track, which was dug up some years ago and turned into a carpark. Now, under a revolutionary plan, the carpark is to be dug up and turned into - would you believe? - an athletics track. That's progress. No wonder the school has to keep a...

Re: Attitudes to sports

I didn't mind rugby too much though with both housemasters in Col B playing at senior club level, you were expected to be brilliant which I wasn't.

Loved cricket. I was a pretty good pace bowler and a mean third slip fielder. Unfortunately, my batting skills were not that great.

Re: All this is incredibly sad

I only have a VERY vague recollection of the chapel revolt and I cannot remember the exact reason for it. You must remember that Col B sat nearest and to the left of the altar so were highly conspicuous to the religious 'Powers that Be' !

Re: All this is incredibly sad

I cannot recall CMES EVER visiting Col B, or hearing of him ever entering any house come to that.

I think he was too aloof for that sort of task.
