Re: Old Blue County cricketers

He just was not given sufficient opportunities by Sussex, Andy, so his decision is a wise one, I feel. I'm inclined to agree. Archer, Jordan, Garton and Weiss all appear to be ahead of him in the Sussex pecking order it seems to me as a Kent supporter looking in. I believe Gloucestershire have lost...

I can't quite believe that the Conservative and UNIONIST Party has set in train the break-up of the UK. Cameron & May may go down together as the worst ever PMs. Brexit is a narrowly English obsession.
Not quite. Wales also voted 'LEAVE.'

I see Stuart Whittingham has left Sussex and joined Gloucestershire.

Re: Wendy Fryer

How many other CH masters married infirmary nurses? I can only think of one 'almost' example: Peter Brotherton called his marriage off at the last minute. An indecently late minute, in the view of many. Tom Keeley married dietician Belinda. JE Denison (?spelling) married Nurse Mc Morran (again ? sp...

Re: Wendy Fryer

Condolences to their son, Tim, who was at CH at the same time as me if he reads this. I believe there may have been a younger son too but am not 100% sure.

Re: The Old Blue 2018

If you asked my opinion on a variety of social issues, you would probably be surprised at how reactionary they are, and I too have serious reservations about self-conscious diversity-mongers. However, the most serious problem facing mainly Europe, but other parts of the world too, is nationalism, a...

Re: The Old Blue 2018

Here in this part of Wales we see a lot of flags, the Red Dragon, of course and in recent years that has been joined by St David’s Cross, yellow upright cross in black, and also Owain Glyndwr’s banner see https://l7.alamy.com/zooms/6efa74a090dc40679abbff457d52fa80/flying-the-owain-glyndr-banner-out...

Re: The Old Blue 2018

I appreciate editorial space is at a premium in these financially straitened times but I do think it a pity that obituaries of sadly deceased Old Blues no longer appear to be published given the content of the last two or three editions.

Another tradition gone.

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

The Band went to Hertford on one occasion and we marched the girls into lunch. I remember thinking how small the place was and in a town as well, compared to the isolation and size of the Horsham site. A very pleasant day and always nice to get out of the school grounds for a few hours. 99 Red Ball...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

I t’s noteworthy that you saw IAPOTP as A Good Thing. I’d never really reflected on it that way until now, but I remember it well. As a young inmate, and after a brief spell of Baker (and being oblivious to his failings) Hansford felt like an icy blast from the 1950s; the punishments were indeed no...

Re: Seen in passing

The film was made in Hull apparently. I wonder whether or not 'the CH boy' could have been Linton Andrews, later to become Sir Linton Andrews and editor of the Yorkshire Post? http://archive.spectator.co.uk/article/19th-june-1964/21/the-grass-roots Linton Andrews was born in 1886. Does that boy look...

Re: Seen in passing

The film appears to be from 1902 so the boy could be from either Newgate Street or Horsham presumably.

Re: New deputy head

Interesting that they specify that the denomination of the school is "Church of England". They used to accept Jews and Roman Catholics that I know of - there didn't seem to be any discrimination save based on the pupil's social need. Given that they are recruiting in China and Germany how can they ...

Re: Attitudes to sports

The master i/c of swimming and gym was Mr JH Edwards. He was never called a ‘coach’. But the verb was used for school team training. JHE was a pleasant chap, Cambridge BA, with a son in the school and clearly was not an intellectual. He only taught the most junior forms. JHE was known as 'Fish' Edw...
