Re: The Story of Old Blues in North America - BCOB Book Project

I remember an American called Michael Schmidt (? spelling) spending a full academic year at CH during my own first academic year of 1965/1966 but do not recall any others during the remainder of my time. I stand to be corrected by other contemporaries! I am therefore surmising that Schmidt was the l...

In spite of the recent event at Twickenham, why limit this thread to Rugby? So then we could have mention of Cricket (and DRW Silk). Why stop there? There are Rowing, etc (and even Tiddly Winks) to consider.
Feel free to elaborate.

Re: Old Blue Rugby 'Blues'

I am sure John Cullen and Bill Biddell were Cambridge blues in the early 80s. Well remembered! I should have thought of those particularly Cullen who I believe wasn't that far away from an England trial as a scrum half. I think he played for London and South East back in the days divisional sides p...

Old Blue Rugby 'Blues'

On the day of the Oxford v Cambridge varsity match I wondered how many we have had and how recently. I cannot think of any Old Blue male pupils within the past 50 years or so. The late Geoff Hines being the most recent to my knowledge. I am aware of some Rugby Blue CH Masters: TGR Davies, WPC Davies...

Re: CH in Art

Checking out the website for the "Impressionists in London" exhibition which has just opened at Tate Britain, I note that it includes a painting by James Tissot called "London Visitors" which depicts some important looking members of the bourgeoisie plus a couple of Housey boys. Do CH pupils crop u...

Re: Scholarships to CH -- and beyond

As I understand it, it was the West Gift that kept the girls school open, as the will specified a number of girls to benefit as well as boys. As to scholarships to Oxbridge, I know the one I had has changed a lot. It was an Abbott's Scholarship, then for the sons and daughters of the clergy of the ...

Re: Can you identify this pupil from 1969?

Sadly Mike Trubridge, the originator of this thread, is shown as 'no longer with us' in the newsletter I received from Gina Skillings today. I'm shocked having met him again in 2012 at the 40 years on event. At that time he still looked fit enough to be eminently capable of giving a good account of ...

Re: Less flamboyant CH teachers

Bogey Fryer had a dreadful temper. I remember him nearly throttling someone with his own scarf in one math class. Truly alarming. Beats Tom Keeley bashing someone in the front row over the head with a Lewis & Short. N.T. Fryer was my housemaster during my entire time in Coleridge B. Everyone knew h...

Re: Richard 'Dickie' Dawe

I'm very sorry to read this. Mr Dawe was a very approachable teacher and his encouragement in the years to 'O' level enabled me to 'punch above my weight' in English until my true lack of knowledge and expertise of literature was exposed at 'A' level. He ran an ornithological club on Hobbies Afterno...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lobster

Perhaps that explains his highly suspect habit of drawing the bone structure of the human skeleton on naked boys in class? Was he even teaching by the time you attended CH? He was retired from formal teaching when I was there although he still assisted with CCF and had his lab, bees etc. I am in no...
