Re: Daily Timetable

I'm impressed by Michael's detailed memory, puts mine to shame. Cold Baths were not myths in Thornton A while 'Fred' Hazelhurst ran it. Monitors would inspect towels to check they were damp. The 'old soldiers' would splash a bit of water on the towel but most ran the gauntlet of the bath. One bath f...

Daily Timetable

I've been trying to recall the timetable we had at CH in the 1950s. We seemed to fit a lot in and I can't recall how it was all scheduled. I recall being up promptly and at Th A it was cold baths except on Sundays. A parade for breakfast then back to the house or did we go straight to chapel? Presum...

Re: "Guests" of HM

One more 'for the record'. William Miller was deputy House Captain of Lamb B and a Grecian who left in about 1951-3(-ish). He did his National Service learning Russian with the Royal Navy and subsequently went to University. At some stage he published an article on the national defence plans in a n...

Re: "Guests" of HM

I do remember in the late 1940s there was one boy expelled "for the usual reason". Some years later a group of us were in the house master's study for a play-reading and he, having had a few drinks, reminisced about this boy and said, last he had heard was that he had been in prison.

Re: Even more sad news

Though John Hansford was head for a short time, he had been brought out of retirement to oversee the merging of the schools after what had been a period of friction. He had previously served as head of King Edward School Witley for 11 years. I imagine that it is because King Edward School had the sa...

Picture in the Times ? Housey

In todays Times, (25/4/11) page 12, there is an article about 'Emotional scarring' of boarders at school. We may all have our opinions of such scarring but I'm curious to know if the picture shown to illustrate a boarding school is taken from Housey. The main evidence is of boys appearing to have ho...

Re: Corporal Punishment......

My memories of school in the early 50s, were that corporal punsihment was a very real fact of life. I can only remember once being beaten by a master and that was from Carey for some minor matter of not having learnt some facts in class. One stayed behind after the class for the punishment and it wa...

That missed opportunity

When reading the recent issue of 'The Old Blue' I was working through the obituaries (that gives my age away) when I was struck by one for Simon Cox. I remembered him but was totally unaware that he was an Old Blue. My late wife was was a practice manager at a surgery that was opposite the hospital ...

Michael Marland

I see in The Times today an obituary for Michael Marland Th A 44-53. he was a larger than life character at school and as head of North Westminster Community School he was seldom out of the news. He was often wheeled on by the media as an expert on Comprehensive education. One year with tongue in ch...

I've been quite surprised following this thresd to see how bullying continued into modern times. In the 40s & 50s the discipline was very much in the hands of the monitors. Most rose to the responsibility and acted fairly in the way they administered punishment. The norm was beating with the girdle ...

Saluting

I seem to remember (how many comments start that way) that in the fifties it was required that if we met a master when out in Horsham or elsewhere we should salute him. The same went for lady teachers as they were honary men and we always called them sir. The idea was that because we had no cap to r...

Rock School part 2

I find the Rock School broadcasts are an interesting source of peripheral information about the present school. I was struck by the idealism shown in the debate by several speakers from the floor in publically expressing views which run counter to the popular cynicism so often expressed in the media...

DT article on CH

Have you seen the article in the Telegraph today (Sept 24th) which gives a full page to CH entitled "What would the Victorians say" I think the writer is trying to be provocative but doesn't seem to have done his homework. He seems to think of CH as a Victorian foundation. One quote is "Wouldn't mor...
