Re: Home visit from a busar

Hi Premama, this forum does not seem to have many parents posting at the moment, just a few of us who were at the school long ago, so I don't think we will be able to help. I believe the usual answer nowadays is to search Facebook to see what you can find there, if the school can't help.

Re: DAMBUSTERS AND C.H.

Quite right, the girls' badges had him veiled, can't remember the details. Hmm, my niece was one of the last to wear such a badge as she was at CH at the time of the merger. I must ask her whether she was allowed to keep the badge. I wonder whether she even noticed the difference when she got a plat...

Re: Happy Birthday John Hopgood.

I remember the Islamabad one starting, however that was very definitely expatriate and started by somebody at the British Embassy*. It may have died later as the date given on John's link is long after we left Islamabad. *Pakistan was out of the Commonwealth at the time so an Embassy not a High Comm...

Re: DAMBUSTERS AND C.H.

Thanks David, I bow to your superior knowledge! Pamela Henson was in my year, the other girl wasn't. As to your pub quiz question, are girls nowadays still protected from such obscene (!) sights? Are the current plates identical? Now the school is coed, presumably girls don't have to be protected fr...

Re: UK’s Top Schools - where’s CH?

It seems to be far more raw competition than real need nowadays than it was when I was there!

Re: DAMBUSTERS AND C.H.

Thanks David, I remember Elizabeth Onley, swimmer and violinist, the name Vyvyan Denzey rings faint bells but no memory of Vyvyan Scotland. I’m surprised you say two girls in 1959, I can only remember one. It was the year I started, I think her name was Pamela Henson. She sat next to me at Great Tow...

Re: DAMBUSTERS AND C.H.

Katharine, Oooops! Sorry about that. Actually, I did see the lady to whom you are referring (note the grammar!), but she was so much taller and older looking than the boys that I assumed she was a teacher. I don't normally feel sorry for Princess Maragaret but I did on seeing this, with all those h...

Re: Happy Birthday John Hopgood.

It shows JR has never led the expatriate life! I think I first came across such groups in Islamabad. I should check, have they reached the UK?

Re: Happy Birthday John Hopgood.

Our Rector's elder daughter - now 15 - shares your birthday John. Not the best of timings for a Vicarage family! I had a colleague in the 80s, who was born on Christmas Day, the only treat for her birthday she remembered from her childhood was that she was let off the washing up! We were told this e...

Re: Where is home

Possibly because I had been a boarder, I made sure we remained connected with our sons. Yes they started boarding at 8, but they certainly knew us! We saw them every school holidays and they went to their grandmothers for half terms. One of their comments on their lives is not that they missed us, b...

Re: Where is home

It’s not just boarding school pupils. Our sons had difficulty with this concept, we were a British Council couple and were moved every few years, mostly moving continent as well as home. To the boys, Home was moveable it was where their parents were, not a fixed physical building. Recently I went to...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lobster

I haven’t seen any these “very public open air urinals” here, but I admit I haven’t been looking for them, so I’ll ask a local. I wonder if they have vanished as did the elegant Parisian “Pissoirs” some years ago. But at least there seem to be no unisex toilets in The Hague. I first saw them in 201...
