Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lobster

I haven’t seen any these “very public open air urinals” here, but I admit I haven’t been looking for them, so I’ll ask a local. I wonder if they have vanished as did the elegant Parisian “Pissoirs” some years ago. But at least there seem to be no unisex toilets in The Hague. I first saw them in 201...

Re: Scholarships to CH -- and beyond

I think it is coincidence. She told us the history of the school every Founder's Day, and I'm sure she would have mentioned it had she been related!

Re: Scholarships to CH -- and beyond

As I understand it, it was the West Gift that kept the girls school open, as the will specified a number of girls to benefit as well as boys. As to scholarships to Oxbridge, I know the one I had has changed a lot. It was an Abbott's Scholarship, then for the sons and daughters of the clergy of the C...

Re: Should Christ's Hospital Stop Being a Faith School?

At Hertford, while I was there, if you were not down as belonging to another denomination and you did not put your name down for confirmation then the Headmistress did ask you why not. As I had been confirmed, I don't know how the conversations with DR went, nor how much pressure was applied. You we...

Re: Time flies

I'd be surprised if any Old Blue did not remember their first day, certainly those of us who had to change completely into school uniform and had no familiar clothes to wear. Surely it is seared on the memory? I didn't remember the date, but have just searched for a1959 calendar, so I almost certain...

Re: Happy Birthday Ladies !!!!

Why thank you kind sir! I was actually due on Partition Day of India and Pakistan, and my father used to tease me that had I been born then I would have had the extra name of Pakistan for the new country and the new baby. At least I think he was teasing, I was never quite certain! With everything ab...

I'm surprised that the depth allowed was as much as 10", that's pretty deep and far deeper than our line! (Or wasit 10" with a boy in the bath?). 6s didn't actually have any markings but some houses had markers fixed to the plug chain at about 6".

I have certainly remembered it since September 1959, which is quite a long time! I don't remember other things said to me that day, but I do remember that!

Re: Roy Salisbury

I remember the name, but that's all. I don't remember any medicals in London. I do remember the address 26 Great Tower Street, I remember where I sat for the Almoner's exam - who sat opposite me and who sat at the end of the table, but I don't remember any medicals. I do remember a medical my first ...

Re: Clean clothes at Horsham in the 40s & 50s

It is astonishing how similar this all is to the regime at Hertford in the late 50's and 60's. Sheets top to bottom and a clean one on top every week; clean underclothes and lisle stockings twice a week; clean blouse and pinny once a week. Maybe that was just the national norm at that time. Quite a...

Re: Sharks

It was in the small corridor just off the dining-hall which also housed a telephone call box which I often used. You were allowed to use a telephone box??? We really were second class citizens. No way were we allowed such luxuries. I was allowed one phone call home in all my time, to tell my parent...

Re: Sharks

I had to look this up in Wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watson_and_the_Shark You may be pleased to know, youngsters now at Horsham are no longer terrified by it At his death, Watson bequeathed the 1807 painting to Christ's Hospital, with the hope that it would prove "a most usefull Lesson to You...

Re: RESEARCH

David, you were boys, we girls had to be protected at all times, accidents might happen! The walls around the school were topped with broken glass. We never knew whether it was to keep us in, or keep marauders out. Remember, we were in a town, not in the country. We were not allowed out into Hertfor...
