Sometimes I forget

This morning I was talking with a group of ladies about my age en route to a meeting. Somehow, we got to talking about school uniform, and once again I completely forgot that my experience wasn’t the norm for schools in the 60s. I had said that all uniform was provided including underwear. Somehow i...

Re: The Old Blue 2018

I got it online yesterday, I’ve been opting for as much online as possible, given the paper mountain. It’s easier to read on my iPad than on my Mac!

It’s all a very different school from the one I went to!

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

The girls that came to Horsham for the Quatercentenary were shown round by, I suppose selected, Grecians. The buzz was that, on passing the pillar box outside the Common Room, one of the girls asked 'Are you allowed to post things in that?' St Matthew's Day was the girls' only other manifestation f...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree about the meaning of the phrase The Other Place, I’ve always understood it to be slightly derogatory, but perhaps that’s biased by being an Oxford graduate where it was derogatory about Cambridge. Two years ago, Hertford Old Girls had a very clumsily worded ap...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

Thank you Dick. Both Chrissy and I were at Hertford long before the merger. I’m sure I speak for both of us in saying that we think of ourselves as Old Blues, just as much as anyone who attended the school in Horsham, or indeed London before that. I think Miss Morrison arrived shortly before I left ...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

I seem to have missed it first time round. Did the boys at Horsham at the time of the Merger ever wonder what it would have felt like to be moved lock stock and barrel to a different establishment? For them, there was the change, possibly the exciting change of girls around, but they were in a famil...

Michael, I would hope that you would approve of one more exemption from VAT, sanitary products. It’s a disgrace there should be VAT on such essential items for women.

Don't think such ideas would have been tolerated at Hertford in my day! Seriously I can't remember it happening but who knows whether there were any in other houses!

Re: Seen in passing

What a wonderful piece of film, I love all the clothes shown. Not many churches would have such a large congregation now! The little Housey boy (Prep surely?) seems to have a ribbon attached to one of his buttons. I know my grandfather had to sign that my father (born 1914) had worn the uniform in t...

Re: New deputy head

We had a few Roman Catholics, who were taken to Mass every so often. Baroness Ruth Deech, nee Ruth Frankel, is Jewish and famously did not get a leaving bible. The first Moslem girl joined in my last year.

The chapels were consecrated as Anglican, so no wonder the denomination is Anglican!

Re: When You Left CH, Did You Cease to Have Access to the Musical Instrument You'd Learned How to Play?

Life at Hertford sounds absolutely gruesome back then Katharine. Culturally and in other ways. Was this due to the Headmistress Formerly Known as DR? Or That Woman as some refer to her? I don't really know the answer to that David. It probably was a lot to do with DR. One thing I have been aware of...

Re: When You Left CH, Did You Cease to Have Access to the Musical Instrument You'd Learned How to Play?

I can't speak for the other houses at Hertford, but we were very restricted. When I started there was a wind up gramophone in the house, later replaces with an electric one. We weren't allowed to play ANY music on it during Lent. The more I read this Forum the more differences I find between the two...

Re: Congratulations to this year's Grecians and their new Headmaster

I've an idea that in my time girls could apply to both Oxford and Cambridge, but boys only one of them, this was before co-ed colleges of course. I certainly applied to both, but didn't get an interview at Cambridge. I was applying after A levels, I would love to know whether I would have got into I...
