Re: Annoying car man

Not exactly related, but when my son was using our house in Guildford, he paved over the front lawn so that I could park my car off road when we visited. (The council charges a fortune for visitor's tickets and you only get a book of 30 per year). He works in Farnborough, got knocked off his motorbi...

Re: When You Left CH, Did You Cease to Have Access to the Musical Instrument You'd Learned How to Play?

In 1959 under Chern, Barnes B had mainly classical music. CJ Miller arrived and we got Blues and Jazz. I have a couple of 10" records that belonged to CJM with music from Leadbelly, Paul Whiteman, (History of Jazz) and also one of Edmundo Ross and his Rumba Band. I had forgotten about the last one, ...

Isn't that what you pay the men in blue for, if they think it is worth it?

Didn't Rev John Robson go on to be the Queen's chaplain?
Maybe there is some connection somewhere?

Didn't he arrive at CH To join Rev. Pullen around 1963 ?
Yes
He had also been involved in Hungary in 1956, I believe.

Re: When You Left CH, Did You Cease to Have Access to the Musical Instrument You'd Learned How to Play?

Bit of CH related pop trivia: Learned recently that the Brandenburg style trumpet solo on Penny Lane was played by an Old Blue. Forget his name but I believe he presented a new bass drum to the band and there was a photo in the OB. On the subject of French Horns, I have a jazz LP by Johhny Griffin,...

Re: Data Protection Act

It is at times like this that the demise of common sense becomes more apparent. It all depends who you get and whether they have the ability to use their last remnants of independent grey cells. We have suffered much of the above, but it seems to be more prevalent in the UK than abroad. I have alway...

Thanks Geoff.
My sister's grandson has been excluded but I was unclear what it involved.

Re: Did monitors have any real use?

The fagging system is quite similar to the "prison bitch" system. Once you strip away all the pretentious layers of "culture" and "tradition", you realize there isn't much difference, it's all mindless and brutal protection rackets and petty psychological tricks. I was a swab for 5 terms and did it...

Re: Did monitors have any real use?

Sitdowns ? I never came across them. I recently tried to trace the whereabouts of the school and house punishment books a few years ago. They had to be kept by law at the time. Guess what ? YUP ! Amesia rules, OK ? I remember the punishment book, from which I remember the number of punishments give...

Re: Did monitors have any real use?

Were they not able to give out " Sit-downs " as punishment? I think it was a maximum of two ( 10 minutes ) before you were reported to a master. Nowadays I am not quite sure about using the word master! When I was the junior dorm monitor, which involved reading on a Saturday, early on I discovered ...

Re: Teaching staff

I found slide rules a joy to use............... I didn't do too much In the way of Mechanics so didn't do that kind of calculation. I used slide rules extensively in Ghana when I was teaching there, Mine (12 inch version) and my soroban are on my desk and get used occasionally. Yes, electronic calc...

Re: Michael Scuffil

When I became the OB editor, my predecessor, Paddy Drake, said that one of the best things I could do for my successors, was to prepare my own obituary. At least then, it would not need editing. When my brother-in-law died he left very detailed papers for his widow. Not only had he prepared the for...

Re: Michael Scuffil

There must be a few of our lot (JR, MS, PWB, Me) who might pop our clogs at some point. Perhaps the moderators could prepare some obituaries ready for the occasion like the papers do. Banker Brown isn't posting quite so much these days - perhaps he won't be long he departs for the great foreign exc...
