Re: House structure

I have always claimed that I was the last senior boy to leave Barnes B for the outside world. I left Barnes B in 1966 and there was one other leaver, Savins, who was junior to me and hence called first. I spent all of my time in Barnes B, which converted to a Junior House after I left. Over 1964 - 1...

Re: When You Left CH, Did You Cease to Have Access to the Musical Instrument You'd Learned How to Play?

I left CH in 1966 and never gave a thought to continuing to play the trombone, at which was proficient, but nowhere near the standard of others who included NYO players such as Colin Sheen, Jack Springbett, Noel Abel, Paul Barnes and another, whose name escapes me. I wonder whether the Springbett y...

.... and I wasn't going to comment on ' Freaky 's' outburst above. However, as stated before, I voted for Brexit and therefore was part of the majority. I think thats called DEMOCRACY ? My bold. Correct use of the past tense. You’re in the minority now. The referendum should re-run and we should co...

Re: Thornton B Sword

I thought of putting a photo up of the blowpipe and machete but was defeated by technology. The blow pipe is 70" long with an 8" 'bayonet' attached to the top. It actually belongs to my son, who brought it back from Brunei when he visited with a friend of ours who was in charge of CFBT for Brunei. M...

Re: Thornton B Sword

I should add that despite the regulations about looting a lot of small items seem to find their way back to the UK and USA. About four years ago Grand Admiral Donitz's baton was sold by the family of a 'senior officer' who had been in Flensburg in 1945. David  I seem to remember from my time...

Re: Damian Le Bas, Radio 4 Book of the Week

This is vaguely off topic and probably only of interest to me. When I was helping my uncle on my mother's side to do the family tree, one of his ancestors (1890's) had a relationship with a servant whose surname was Traveller, and they had 2 children. He married someone else but I always wondered wh...

Re: Reading to the dormitory

I left CH in 66 and was a student apprentice at Vickers, on a 1-3-1. Other apprenticeships were 5 - 7 years I think. On one of my university holidays, I was asked to work alongside a young Sikh, who although he could make a good approximation of the tool he was making (in the apprentice school we al...

Meh! Close enough. :-)
You remind me of a director where I worked, who was reputed to have refused to go to Central America as there had just been a revolution in Peru.

Re: Coleridge: the bones

My neighbour in the village is Paul Kennedy, who was married to an author, Maeve. She wrote children's books under the name of Maeve Friel but died of cancer a few years ago.
When I saw the author of the article, I thought for a moment that she had come back from the dead!!

Something's gone wrong with the drill. We were told 'Take with the left, shake with the right, bow to the Lady Mayoress'.
Could it be that the photograph is reversed? Look at how the coat buttons up.

I will ask my sister but it was Kipling 3373, later changed to 857 3373, not Mottingham.
