He was as quirky a teacher as you could imagine. He would for example set up practicals for pairs of students but give no instructions whatsoever as to how to use the apparatus provided. Surely this icon of the science dept merits a thread of his own. To this day I can still remember that "A true fruit is a ripened carpel and nothing else" & that if any one mentions Nitric acid you must immediately shout "Oxidising agent".

As was the "tradition" at the time, I sold mine on my last day for some paltry sum. Now realise that it was a rather beautiful piece of hallmarked silver artistry!
