Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

Avon, You say: " ...Still, they do a lot for charidee, don’t they? Oh hang on, that’s Rotarians.. ." I think that that is a little unfair and were you to consult https://mcf.org.uk/ you would see that the Masons do quite a lot for charity. I was in the Army for 32 years and never knowingly met Mason...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

Avon says: "...Quite the obverse in the Senior Service..." Hmmmm? What about Navy Lodge 2612 which is described as " the Lodge for Commissioned Officers of the Royal Navy. "? It describes itself as: " ...being the premier Naval Lodge in the world, with an unparalleled history that encompasses four m...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

This business of C.H. and Freemasons comes up about once every five years without fail. It is certain that there were links in the 1890s because they were paraded for all to see during the move to Horsham. There are several illustrations of the then Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) laying the...

Re: NEW DRUM

Seeing the very smart new drum reminds me of a question I have long meant to ask. Can anyone explain what the white dangling plaited strings that hang under the drum are for. Are they purely decorative or do they have a function - apart from tripping up a very short drummer??

Re: What was the attraction?

"...I struggle to see why it was attractive to a young unattached male teacher (most teachers were male then)." I think that you are looking at a 1950-60s issue through 2018 spectacles. In those days it was the norm in many professions for the juniors to be single, and, in many cases, compulsorily ...

Re: House structure

rb, You are really delving into history! To fill in a few (possible) gaps. I joined in Summer Term 1948. At that time the block at the Horsham end of the Avenue (later Leigh Hunt) was the Prep School, divided into Prep A and Prep B. The Prep was self-contained for all activities (lessons, classrooms...

WHERE IS CHOBA?

In all this turmoil in the Old Blue community, there is one body which is deafeningly silent. So, I would like to ask 'where is the Christ's Hospital Old Blues' Association board'? By this I do not mean the non-Old Blue Development Office suits in the Counting House, but the Old Blues on the Board, ...

Re: A WAY AHEAD?

Actually, I was not suggesting a government enquiry, with all that would entail. I envisage an enquiry set up by the Council of C.H. but thereafter strictly 'hands-off.' I think that could be made to work.

A WAY AHEAD?

Very sadly, it is clear that there is a lot of murkiness in the past five decades at C.H. and all (or, possibly not quite all!) concerned would like to see the facts exposed. It is also clear that few would trust C.H. itself to conduct such an investigation. So, I would like to suggest something on ...

Re: Thornton B Sword

Good grief, Hopgood, you sound like a one-man assassination squad! To meet you, have the appearance of a benevolent, kindly, peaceable sort of chap, but hidden from view is this armoury of cutting, hacking and stabbing weapons, together with a multi-purpose blowpipe complete with tube (for poisoned ...

Re: Politics

May I correct one specific item for the sake of accuracy? Reference has been made to the 'Herrstadt crisis' and 'covering up in secrecy.' In fact, the crisis was at the HERRSTATT (ie, 'statt' not 'stadt') bank in Koln and there is quite a lot about its troubled demise on the Internet, although it is...

Re: Politics

I disagree totally with rockfreak, but, first I should say where I am coming from. I speak and read German (perhaps not as well as I used to, but enough to get by). I enjoy German poetry. I have lived in Germany for seven years, mixed with the local community, had good German friends, and travelled ...
