... blouses in the sixth form. However nothing compared to the trauma of yellow dresses!
We didnt have house photos in 3's. Our lives at Hertford were less well recorded than those at Horsham I think.

Re: Yellow dresses

I remember the yellow dresses as my sister Paula wore them when she was at Hertford from 1954-61 – I even have a photo of her in one somewhere. Your tale of stitching yellow fabric for scrubs reminds me of her darning skills that she learn at CH. She used to say that they had to darn their knickers ...

... the forum.

I don’t know when you were at Horsham, but there was a time when the girls entrusted to the care of the Religious, Royal and Ancient Foundation of Christ’s Hospital were educated in Hertford not Horsham. For some time our Summer Sunday uniform was a yellow dress, the subject of this topic.

Re: Yellow dresses

I seem to remember my Mother ALWAYS wore gloves and a hat when attending church services. It was considered the correct dress code.

... Hertford OGs posting. http://www.chforum.info/php/search.php?keywords=Yellow+dresses I was surprised that Frances didn’t remember the greenfly, I did!

Somewhere in there is my memory of attending Horsham Speech Day my brother’s first year, which I think would have been 1953 when the dresses were ...

Yellow dresses

Does anyone else remember these with total horror? The unflattering style; the sweat protectors; the AWFUL colour (that flattered no-one); the greenflies attracted to the colour in their thousands ...............
Well, I have been sewing scrubs for Harrogate hospital recently. All very fine until ...

Re: BIG ink pen stains on white crested polos!

In the 1950s when we wore awful yellow linen dresses for Sunday best, we used to soak ink stains in milk before handwashing them. Don't know whether it would work for whites, but often the old wives' tales have a glimmer of truth in them - and I definitely qualify as a old wife! Seriously though, these ...

3. Grecians coats have no yellow lining. The smell of some types of yellow dye was supposed to deter mites, lice ...

It's also more orange than yellow - though our yellow dresses were indeed more of a deep yellow than a lemon yellow.......Perhaps its not Hertford at all, although it would have been provided to the Hertford Museum by the CH Museum, along with all the rest of the clothing except for the odd piece like ...

Dresses never washed? Frances! I shudder! Did you stitch in those ol' dress shields?

Re: Hertford Uniforms

As another who wore a yellow dress throughout my time at Hertford, I do not remember the greenfly problem that Katharine seems to be so worried about ... then went 'off' and smelled revolting - especially as I don't think the dresses were ever washed. On the subject of Moygashel though, it was probably ...

Re: That Yellow Dress

Those of you who had to wear the yellow dress introduced in 1953 might like to know that I was informed over the week-end that it was made of ... it did not work out better.

As someone who did wear the said dresses, I think the real problem with them was the greenfly. Would that have ...

... every single time we went into chapel, but they did not compare with yellow dresses for ghastliness!

I don't remember any of the Ward mistresses wearing hats in Dining Hall. That was the correct term until the early 60s when Wards became Houses. All the staff who went to chapel had to wear hats ...

... main designs were:
1. Coatfrock. Introduced in late 1940s. Blue with yellow piping, it was elegant and popular. Worn to about 1962.
I had the impression that these came in earlier than the late 40s, I didn't think any Post War changes were made until the yellow dresses. They had a cream coloured ...
