Re: celebrity culture

Avon, you say that George Michael made truly awful music. Rather subjective I feel. He sold more than 100,000,000 records and is ranked 40th on the all time greats. Not on your list maybe but there again maybe you prefer Motorhead, Englebert Humperdink, Bob Marley, Susan Boyle or Mozart. Beauty is ...

Re: Politics

Well I suppose you could say that the male population has since the dawn of time steered the world and look where we are now. It's hard to disagree with that on the day that the US returns an utter cnut as the leader of the free world. But in my view one of the facets of Women's Liberation is to be...

Re: Oh dear..here we go again.

Thirdly, it seems to be assumed that those now running C.H. would not like the school to be known as 'a leading boarding school with £30,000 fees.' Perhaps, that is exactly what they do want and the charitable element is an embarrassment for them? I am not saying that is the case, but it does seem ...

Kit Bartlett wrote:Should not someone, preferably from the school, have corrected the mistaken impression given that fees are all £30,000 per annum ?
Sadly, that's not remotely newsworthy. The HM foolishly wading in with an unnecessary rebuttal, is more so. Who does PR for CH? They need a kicking.

Re: Oh dear..here we go again.

Heavens knows what compelled the HM to make such a statement, it's an act beneath the dignity of CH, and need not be remarked on.

Re: Jumping Generations

Thinking about it a bit more I feel it may have been a rather clever euphemism - nice one, Avon!! If I am correct, there was supposed to be a court hearing in December, but I have never seen any reports. David  Sorry, I was being a bit scurrilous. I must admit to a morbid fascination with th...

Re: Jumping Generations

That reminds me. What's the status of the legal case against some alleged generation jumping at CH in the 1990s?

Re: Poor disciplinary C.H. staff

I'm with JR. I also need to revisit my understanding of the word offensive it would seem? Personally, I found Thatcher awfully offensive, particularly after the 'no such thing as society' quote. I find it more offensive when people try to stifle the opinions of others with faux-offence. Hope this he...

Re: celebrity culture

As it happens, the real greats of my adolescence are still alive: Little Richard, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry. But I doubt whether the news media will get quite so hysterical when they pop off. The generation that venerated such artists no longer pulls the strings at NME and MM. Th...

Postings from Brown cause a scramble To decipher his long-winded ramble. His scattergun thought Has the listener caught, As in a dense thicket of bramble. A shade of pot and kettle, considering your rambling missives to the broadsheets, followed by your massively conceited reposting of them on the ...

Re: Politics

If you'll excuse the literal Droste Effect, I'd like to be opaque about my use of the word opaque, simply to observe that it neatly encapsulates a range of reasons why a tertiary education might not be in order. Being a matelot and not a pongo, I was never subjected to such coarseness on the parade ...

Re: Politics

I think it is elitist to rail against History of Art; it has been a proven means of getting jolly nice but fundamentally opaque children to university for many years.

Also were it not for HofA, Kate Middleton wouldn't have been able to chase William all the way to St Andrews and get her man.

Re: Politics

Replying to Sejintenej - I wasn't really referring to CH, I was talking more about the elite, expensive public schools where these days they seem to have state of the art drama, music and arts centres and coaches to match. Meanwhile, the state schools get trimmed back by comparison. But at least an...
