Re: What was the food chain?

I can’t resist an alternative a response to the thread title:

The food was undoubtedly wholesome, nutritious, and delicious - right up until the point where it entered the CH Kitchens.

Mrs Keely made Lucrezia Borgia seem like Nigella.

Re: Christ's Hospital / The Church of England / Child Abuse

This issue of references is important and also actionable. As CH moved Karim on knowing full well he was a bad’un but supplied a reference that was sufficiently glowing for him to obtain employment elsewhere, then that is serious misconduct and a failure to even faintly recognise the obligation to p...

I see what you are getting at. In another twenty years or so we shan’t have a problem.

In another thread, Golfer wrote: No. That information would stay with the Counting House. Occasionally donation governors might visit a pupil in school and house parents would be aware of that, but I don't think all such pupils were on full fee remission as the CH definition of "need" was not just f...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

Well seeing as they describe themselves thus, it must be so, clearly. Admittedly I inhabit a junior arm of the Senior Service but culturally - and publicly - Freemasonry was derided, practically proscribed. There was a FONA in the 90s who once told our wardroom something along the lines of ‘and none...

Re: Mr Clippy

Disturbing. Brings back memories of watching A Nightmare on Elm Street in the house common room on my squits and pretending it didn't scare the living daylights out of me. But how did you manage to watch an 18 certificate film aged 11...? Such things were possible until the CH Beverley Hills ...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

As an aside, I once had a very long conversation on this subject with an RAF squadron-leader. He assured me that it was impossible to get beyond the rank of group-captain unless you were a Mason. Whether that was true, or not, I do not know, but he was a very serious-minded man and clearly thought ...

...take a moment to consider why Sillett et al. were so keen to suppress its distribution. The bluster of Sillett blundering around a set of recently departed OB in the hazy summer, with his mix of faux-pleading and legal threats was a joy to behold and an absolute vindication of the fact he had be...

Re: Housey Rap, recent convictions

ER McCall is down as housemaster of Maine A in my 1985 blue book. I can't find a Patterson. That’s right. Crud was Ma A. One of reasons Ma A was so wild - those guys went from the incredibly repressive regime of Grimmit to the devil-may-care world of Crud. There were a a few other contrasts - the b...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

I think it was unlikely that the indicted or guilty had Masonic links. Spoonbill neatly captures JAH’s iconoclasm, affected or otherwise. However, I feel that given the fact that CH’s governance and pastoral care in the 80s and 90s was so **** the Masonic link is worth exploring in terms of undue in...

Re: House structure

I’m pretty certain that was Freemasons as opposed to Mr Mason. It was. At the time there was a master (Neil Simms) who - whilst slightly batty - encouraged pupils to question the value and motives of such organisations as Freemasons. Though the subject of Freemasons, and in particular the relations...

So Watch and Wait would be my view for now - let's see what the police do. Premature to do anything else at this point?
I think that this is sound counsel. However, I think that we should set the expectation that an independent enquiry is demanded when the time comes.

Re: House structure

I would hold APFA up as one of the individuals of significant integrity at CH in my era. A bit hidebound but I think he had values and standards that were shockingly remiss in others ostensibly senior to him. I was very, very peripherally involved in the Housey Rap, such that I didn’t know the lyric...

Focus on getting 1552 right. This isn’t your expertise, or era.
