Re: Politics

More on Steve Hilton this week. His missus is the well-heeled Rachel Whetstone who is a vice president at Uber. Uber have been getting all sorts of bad publicity recently and Hilto does seem to have a habit of getting involved with dodgy people of one sort or another. Whatever benefits he was charge...

Re: celebrity culture

Going back to the very start of this thread, Chuck Berry certainly got the big media treatment when he died, including TV concert footage. When Dr Scuffil and I were at school rock 'n' roll was denigrated by the authorities at school and elsewhere, partly perhaps because it was just so wild and part...

Re: Politics

Our friend Steve Hilton's in the news again. After his roles as, variously, free-market, state-slashing Thatcherite under Cameron, and then bleeding heart, compassionate conservative after he'd walked out of Number Ten, he now surfaces with another move sharp right in which he's revealed to be plann...

Re: Politics

Now that the EU has made a reply I think it's time for the second verse of Vitae LamBrexit: The streets of Brussels are running red, Red with the wreck of a deal that broke. Tusk's said no and May looks half dead, And Spain has given us quite a poke. The river of bile has brimmed its banks And the D...

Re: Politics

OK public schoolboys (and girls, although Katharine seems the only one game enough to venture on to this site these days). The article 50 button has been pressed, the other 27 states have had the gauntlet thrown down, where do we stand? The Brexiteers are gung ho. I have composed a poem for them, ba...

Re: problem with Chrome

I always felt sorry for Catweazle who used to shout "electrickery"! when anyone switched on a light. In the sixties my aged grandmother came to live with us. She came from a rural area and had never quite got used to the telephone. When it rang she used to jump. But she discovered that you could sto...

Re: problem with Chrome

This Forum (for me) has suddenly become unreadable on Chrome -- it's covered in red circles enclosing symbolic lines representing text (and I can't shrink the drop-down menus). This doesn't happen in incognito mode, but there of course I can't post, because surprise surprise I'm incognito. I'm writ...

Re: problem with Chrome

The blue has now turned to red. Is this in deference to my political views?

Re: Ghost stories etc?

I've only ever heard this term "bocker" at CH, where it seemed to refer to a rustic. Was it a wider west Sussex term? In my day Mr Barker was always known as Bocker Barker although this may simply have been an opportunity for an alliterative nickname.

Re: Politics

Good to see you back JR. I was getting a bit worried. Hope you're OK. The turnout in London today was mega with lots of medical professionals. As usual the TV coverage seemed to diminish the whole thing. The themes were mainly about privatisation and underfunding. Yours truly got interviewed by BBC ...

Re: Politics

Right, privileged snotbags. Time to boot up some politics again. Tomorrow (Saturday March 4) sees the "Save the NHS" march set off in London - midday at Tavistock Square, heading for Parliament Square, although they probably won't march until 12.30pm if these things are anything to go by. We (well m...

Re: God in the Quad ?

In India they ... burnt their unfortunate widows on the funeral pyres of the deceased husbands. I read somewhere an opinion that the abolition of this practice was the one positive contribution the British made to India. (I can't think of another, either.) We gave them the game of cricket Michael. ...

Re: God in the Quad ?

Going back to the start of this thread, can I suggest that the reason Divinity (as it was amusingly called - it's RE anywhere else) was so boring was because you were being asked to study and take seriously what are essentially a bunch of fairy tales which are, by degrees, charming, gruesome or down...

Re: God in the Quad ?

I suppose much depends on how you define God. Some time ago I was having this very sort of argument on another discussion site and I asked, in my facetious way: "Who is this God dude? Does he support City or United?" Someone posted back to say: "If he's Jewish he probably supports Tottenham."
