Re: Karim's sentence hearing

I had one of my mischievous thoughts the other day. Was it wise of Karim to big up his Ugandan refugee status in his defence? He's perhaps not au fait with Private Eye which use to refer to sexual misdemeanours as Ugandan relations.

Re: The silence of Elizabeth Cairncross

The title of this thread sounds a bit like a film by Rainer Fassbinder.

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Replying to Michael 's piece on boarding and the subject generally, I wonder if there is a compromise here in what I believe is a system elsewhere in Europe and particularly in Denmark. This is a mainly state-run system of weekly boarding for youngsters in their mid-teens who are just needing to stu...

Re: Tom Lawson: the interview

Yes, nothing surprises me. Nigel Lawson himself has now become a professional climate change denier getting lots of lucre from vested fossil fuel interests. And he's also defected to France with some kind of non dom status which is going to allow him to stay there even after Brexit. He himself was a...

Re: Politics

Freaky gets another of his letters into the Guardian today (Sat). Titled "Brexit risks: food and a weak pound", and challenging the notion that a cheap currency is an unalloyed blessing for our exporters given the countervailing costs of oil and other materials which are traded in dollars, along wit...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

I was fortunate enough, thanks to CME Seaman, Old Blue, headmaster of CH, ... to get a job St. Clarence? Surely not? I wonder what he did for Buck's victims? It's a good point. If the sainted Clarence had duly recorded all this in the school records then Buck would presumably not have been able to ...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Sorry to go Back to Buck again. It was my information to JR that caused him to close the AH Buck site way back when. A quick pedantic note. I don't think Buck left on a Sunday. I remember going up to Big Side with a friend, the two of us laden with bats and pads for a house cricket match (a non-Sun...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

I had a different version Richard, having been in Col B at the time. A 13-year-old friend of mine told me that he had been reticent about going back for the start of the summer term in 1956 and his mother dragged out of him why this was the case. He was one of those to whom Buck paid particular atte...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

I know of one occasion when the police were called Michael. I had a friend who was at somewhere like Lancing or Hurstpierpoint in the 1950s where the HM was in the habit of giving the boys alcohol and groping them. Someone called the police and when HM saw them coming he threw himself out of an uppe...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

The common thread that ties them all together is that the school did nothing but simply moved them on. Let's not be anachronistic. It used to be taken for granted that any institution would seek to protect its own reputation. Not so much by cover-up and denial, but simply by not hanging out the dir...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

The moderators have emailed to tell me that my limerick has been removed because one or two people have objected. OK, but by the same token Jim Rayner posted a "like" and richardb laughed at it. So how do we decide when something should be removed? If people are going to object should they not be ob...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Some of these people are exactly what Nick Duffell is talking about in his books about Boarding School Survivors. Your exhortations on this site to read Duffell's bl**dy book will shortly enter double figures. Are you on a commission? No. I just think he's got a lot of relevant things to say about ...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Some of these people are exactly what Nick Duffell is talking about in his books about Boarding School Survivors. You are trying to psychologically square the good education and the magnificent facilities at CH against the risk of being groped by some perv. WISE BL**DY UP! You shouldn't have to run ...

Re: What was the food chain?

There's nothing wrong with not being remembered. No one on this site appears to remember me. Even JR only thinks he remembers me and we were in the same bleddy house for two years. I always enjoyed Angela's posts. What a pity she doesn't post more.
