Re: Politics

Right on cue with my comments about firms decamping to the EU, up pops the Japanese Ambassador with a warning that if their car companies don't get the single market and the customs union they will have to decamp. Only this chilly, xenophobic, inward-looking little island's proximity to the biggest ...

Re: W.P.C. Davies

I had him for Maths and Science in the mid-50s. Sadly these weren't my subjects but he was understanding of my shortcomings and didn't give me too hard a time. The Grauniad is usually pretty good at sports obits but he hasn't featured yet. He formed a famous centre partnership with Jeff Butterfield...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

One of the things that I remember from the 50s was just how long this kind of groping stuff went on without anyone reporting it - to parents or the authorities. One instance that I remember was in the Prep house (not massively serious but still attempts at mild groping) and that had been going on fo...

Re: Politics

Adding to Michael Scuffil's piece on the customs union, our local paper here is big on potential problems at Dover. We here in Gravesend are at the other end of the county but news from southern Kent often makes the headlines and not for the first time are they having kittens in Dover about the hold...

Re: Politics

To avoid answering difficult questions the Maybot has her software engineers implant a new set of platitudes into her brain for every new phase of Brexit. Thus,"Brexit means Brexit" and "A red white and blue Brexit" have long been discarded and I've no doubt a new set of meaningless cliches are alre...

Re: Siegfried Sassoon & Dennis Silk

No, there's only one D Silk (well I think so anyway) - ex-CH, ex-county cricketer and ex-Warden (ie headmaster) of Radley College (Peter Cook's old alma mater). You can see him in his full glory, if that's the word, in two documentaries on You Tube: "Radley College, BBC documentary in several parts"...

Re: CH and Psychiatry

We have to remember that many conditions have been medicalized (for good or ill, I'm making no judgement) in the last 40-50 years, whereas then they were all part of life. There were certainly people I knew who would probably now be diagnosed as having bipolar disorder, others who were borderline a...

Re: CH in Art

I was in Col B with Tony Ray-Jones who has already had retrospective exhibitions but is about to be featured in another showing titled "The Great British Seaside" in which the works of he and other social documentary photographers illustrate the British working class at play from 1963 onwards. This ...

Re: Politics

He's done it again. First week of the new year and Freaky gets another of his missives into the Grauniad. One of their correspondents, Rafael Behr, was suggesting that Jeremy Corbyn represented a total rupture with the party's past. Not so, said I. With Ramsay MacDonald and Tony Blair, certainly. Bu...

Re: Politics

Freaky ends the year with a flourish. A letter in The Observer (24th Dec, titled "Selling Britain by the pound") and one in today's Guardian (28th, under the main heading of "Beware the dangerous orthodoxy of neoclassical economics"). I always fancied that the country had had quite enough of neoclas...

Re: Ladies names, Horsham 50-57

I have a feeling that Fryer's wife was Nurse Herbert while at the Sicker but I can't remember a Christian name. Yes, a nice woman as I recall. Every now and again they would invite a couple of boys over to their house for a very welcome and well-cooked Sunday lunch. Fryer was Froggy Fryer while at h...

Re: Where is home

Nick Duffell (ex-boarder and psychotherapist) covers this in his books The Making of Them and Wounded Leaders. Some of his patients who boarded have told him plaintively "I didn't know where home really was". And an Old Blue posting on one of these threads (possibly The Making of Them, which I seem ...

Re: Less flamboyant CH teachers

Mr Halliday was the red-headed art teacher, Michael. I remember him as a rather nice, friendly man who once told us not to be wishy washy in our paintings. Be bold, he advised. Sadly I never quite made it as CH's version of Mark Rothko.
