Re: American soldiers at CH during the War

Re segregation of US forces (though this has nothing to do with CH): We used to spend our holidays in the 1950s at Ramsgate. This was close to the US air-base at Manston. In the evenings, the fairground which in those days spread out all along the sea-front was full of American airmen -- but only b...

Re: Michael Cherniavsky

Going back to the question of equivalents, in the late 1950's it was reckoned that a pass at Alevel (at least in the sciences) was the same standard as after a year and a half at Harvard or Yale. That said there is a major difference between UK education at this level and that in the USA. Wespeciali...

Moon landings were faked!

I saw an entry on Facebook that said the moon landings were fakes, and were directed by John Cameron. But they were very expensive because he insisted they be filmed on location.

Re:Alzheimers puzzle

Answers: 1.The third room. Lions that haven’t eaten in three years are dead. That one was easy, right? 2.The woman was a photographer. She shot a picture of her husband, developed it, and hung it up to dry (shot; held under water; and hung). 3.Charcoal, as it is used in barbecuing. 4.Sure you can na...

Bye bye Alzheimers

IT SHARPENS THOSE GENES IN YOUR BRAIN AND STALLS ALZHEIMER’S FOR YEARS. 1.A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns and the third is full of lions that haven’t eaten in 3 years. Which ro...

Re:Beware a good diet

Brian and Jan were 85 years old and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they carefully watched their pennies. Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to Jan’s insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last ...

Re: From the sublime to the ridiculous

The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Church b...

Re: Official lists at CH Horsham

I remember at least two sorts of official lists of boys at CH. The other document was called a “House List.” It was a piece of paper (about 30 x 10 cm), headed by the name of the house (and year of publication?), with a list of the surnames of boys in roll order. On the same line were their initial...

Re: Threads being moved

I have a little flag at the top off the screen which tells me which language the keyboard is using. Pretty useful as I normally write in English on a Spanish Keyboard. By clicking on the flag I can switch languages. My French daughter in law has a French keyboard which infuriates my son, when he fo...

A thought for our EU neighbours

Here is another interesting perspective. Let’s say I break into your home ... What a great comparison! A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages! It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV. Her point: Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country p...

Thoughts of a few days

Enjoy when jokes were clean, many years ago. Sometimes, when I look at my children, I say to myself, ‘Lillian, you should have remained a virgin... ‘ - Lillian Carter (mother of Jimmy Carter) **** I had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in ...

Re: Threads being moved

and he forgot the circumflex ê as in la tête Yep. As Arthur Rider said, hats have heads, phantoms have hoods and hotels have roofs. I guess that you are lucky; my laptop died permanantly and I had to get an HP. What a disaster; the old one had all the accented letters, tildes, circumflexes, umlauts...

Don't worry, John, even the French get it wrong sometimes
