Re: Clean clothes at Horsham in the 40s & 50s

I don't ever remember any water restrictions through drought during my time at CH, so I assume you are referring to the 1970's and the times of the hose-pipe bans in the south of England.

Re: Sharks

This painting is important enough to have its own Wikipedia entry. And Copley felt it important enough to paint not one, but three originals. When I was at CH, it was in the Court Room Passage, where it could be inspected close up, and probably fingered by little boys' dirty paws. This location, it...

I knew he had been with Harlequins. He certainly made his point of view well known when supervising rugby games.

Bogey Fryer had a dreadful temper. I remember him nearly throttling someone with his own scarf in one math class. Truly alarming. Beats Tom Keeley bashing someone in the front row over the head with a Lewis & Short. N.T. Fryer was my housemaster during my entire time in Coleridge B. Everyone knew h...

I believe the FF % has been reduced from 26% to about 20%. But, apart from future planned percentages, there are other crucial questions. Have sufficient donations arrived to cover the resulting increase in costs, are some economies underway, and/or is there a current increased running deficit? Int...

Re: Languages, anyone?

David, (above), mentioned patois. I spent many holidays in my teen years in Guernsey where I still have relatives today. My Uncle liked a pint, and often frequented a local pub used by Island fishermen who spoke Guernsey patois which I found fascinating. I also remember well on my earliest visits th...

Re: Sharks

It was in the small corridor just off the dining-hall which also housed a telephone call box which I often used. You were allowed to use a telephone box??? We really were second class citizens. No way were we allowed such luxuries. I was allowed one phone call home in all my time, to tell my parent...

Re: Sharks

I remember the painting very well.

It was in the small corridor just off the dining-hall which also housed a telephone call box which I often used.

I can't say the painting ever frightened me, though I did find it striking, and studied it often.

Don't worry rockfreak, we have a govt. which has not only found the magic money tree to buy itself a majority (the same money would have re-clad all the tower blocks in the country, but not bought their votes), but also one which is positively rolling in its love of red-tape and regulation, as witn...

Re: Visiting the Tower in uniform

I have no idea if such escorted tours of the Tower of London still exist for CH pupils in uniform. My only knowledge of visits in CH uniform to the Tower is that allegedly no entry fee was required. Is this true? Was it ever true? I don’t know, for my home was not in London, so I was never able to ...
