Re: HOUSEY SLANG

There was a programme on television on corporal punishment last night John. Strangely they neglected to mention our old housemaster. And they only touched briefly on the sado-masochistic side of things. Le Vice Anglais was always thought to be the result of young upper class people being sent to si...

. Was corporal punishment ever done on the hand ?
Not at CH to my knowledge but my primary school teacher loved using her ruler.

Same as that, David. I was lucky enough to pick up my 'times-tables' quickly enough in primary school, not to get my knuckles rapped.

Re: HOUSEY SLANG

I think it was Roger who pushed the limit of Pongo's (limited) lattitude by declaiming/'spoonerising' 'Give us hearty thanks' at Grace at a time where there was a competition to see who could get away with what. His voice was notable then. Other tricks were reading it as fast as possible, or having...

Re: HOUSEY SLANG

I know I have referred to this in the past, but a few years back, I attended a Coleridge B reunion, by then of course a girls house. Several of ' old codgers ' were sitting in the day room talking to some of the Col B Girls. They produced a CH Housey Slang book. and wanted to know if we actually eve...

My hopes are not as high though as my dd will be requiring 90% and above bursary There are a couple of members of staff who use this forum. Hope...

Re: From the sublime to the ridiculous

It's getting so bad nowadays that if the announcer on the TV says, "Here is the ten o'clock news", I have to check my watch !!

Re: Sentence of Peter Webb referred to Court of Appeal

I applaud the HM's comments entirely.

It will be interesting to see how the remaining trials pan out, especially if the accused contimue to maintain their innocence.

Re: Sentence of Peter Webb referred to Court of Appeal

One of the difficulties with sentencing Webb is that he served an 18 month sentence for offences against one of his victims. The effect of today's judgment is that the Court decided that he should serve the equivalent to a 7 year sentence for the totality of his offending. What we do now know is th...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

My view is that historic cases of any sort ought not to be prosecutable. Seriously? Yes, seriously. I live in a country where the right not to be tried after a certain period is regarded with the same sort of reverence as the British regard trial by jury. Britain and Ireland are, I think, the only ...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

Last night's ITV documentary by Alex Renton showed up the reluctance of the boarding school authorities and bodies like the Independent Schools Couuncil to allow these scandals to spread too widely. Offenders were allowed to quietly leave and in some cases were still given references for jobs at ot...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr

Just caught up on this thread after 10 days in hospital undergoing stroke scans/tests etc. ( Thankfully, clear ), but a deep MRI has reulted in the discovery of severe oesteo-athritis in lower spine, neck and hips, but I digress... I can only repeat what I have said before... I cannot recall ANY inc...

Re: CH and flu

I know I've commented on this before somewhere on here. At then end of one term, 1960-ish, I wasn't allowed home for two days due to being in the sicker. It may well have been a flu outbreak. Chicken Pox was the illness I managed to avoid completely at CH, ( 3 epidemics if memory serves ! ). Later i...
