Just remembered another incident.

An assistant matron left suddenly, allegedly for "interfering " with boys when I was a junior.

I wasn't one of them :!:

Woodworm was mentioned on Test Match Special yesterday when Freddie Flintoff was batting. Pietersen also uses a woodworm apparently.

School for scandal or scandal school

Don't remember too much scandal from my time. One incident I recall though was a master abruptly leaving for allegedly, how can I put this, "assisting" a boy in the bath. Whilst not wishing to break any forum rules I will give a clue that the master shared a name with a participant in the present Ov...

Films in Big School

When I was a lad we used to troop to saturday night pictures once a month or so in Big School. Presumably these days it's videos or DVDs in the Day Room since the films are available that way? When did film nights in Big School stop? I think it lasted my time as I remember seeing A Clockwork Orange ...

"Trash mag." I had completely forgotten that description until JR mentioned it. Yes we read them in my time. I don't recall them being illegal as such, but if a master or monitor saw us with one it was suggested that our time could be better employed reading something of greater literary merit. On t...

No I can't say I do recall the raid you refer to. My recollections of interaction with Barnes B concern highly competitive and physical games of asphalt football, using the drainpipes on each house as goals. The teams comprised all ages from monitors down to squits and the aforementioned Lloyd and F...

Geoff Fordham is the one dressed in flannels and blazer front right of the photo.

Robin Pratt (brother of Graham and Michael) is another monitor identifiable at the front of the picture.

No the 1966 photo was taken in the Summer term. Maine A became a junior house in the Michaelmas term of 1966.

Julian,

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Younger readers might spot a familiar face in the 1968 photo.

Not sure about the effects of the PT described on the pupils. It had disappeared by my time.

However I believe Mr J H Edwards is alive and well in his nineties so I guess it has done him some good!

Michaelmas term soon will start

Squits will their families depart

With trembling hands

They will do up their bands

Hiding their tears in their heart

In my early years we used to have a subuteo league that we played on saturday nights. Every few weeks we would have films in Big School as a bit of variety. During the summer terms, when the evenings were light, I remember plenty of informal football or cricket. In Mid A, my senior house, Ron "Nog" ...

In common with others I returned to CH the year after leaving to visit friends still there. The next visit was five or six years on as a few of us decided to meet at CH being halfway(ish) between London and the Sussex Coast. A year or two after that I showed the place to 'er indoors. I then had noth...
