Thanks, yes I did realise it was 40% when over the threshold! and the cash up-front element of your pension is itself tax-free. Best check on all this - the pensions people have lots of leaflets and also you can phone them / visit the local tax office. They are pretty good face to face and wil answ...

I knew you would come in on this, David! You left out the Welsh in Chester one of these oddities fairly close to me.   It was in the original draft (and the bit about Hereford) but I thought I had already posted those ones. If you insist ....... Of course lawmakers themselves can co...

Re: Absurd laws...?
The poll itself is ridiculous, but the fact that these laws still (apparently) exist is one of the reasons I am delighted to be English. (Note that the murder of a Scotsman in York comes in at a lowly number 10, well below the consumption of mince pies on Christmas Day...) 9. It is illegal to enter...

Re: STOOLBALL
Does anyone remember playing a game called "Stoolball" in the Prep - certainly in the 1940s and maybe later, also? As I recall, you had to prove yourself adept at this stupid game before being allowed to graduate to cricket. There were two posts some 15 feet apart and about 3-4 feet high,...

I'm a bit sceptical about these recent 'records.' Even if we arranged a specific time to be on line, I doubt we'd get more than 40-50. Even more worrying, it means that if they are genuine OBs or interested parties, we have put them off as they don't seem to want to come back and contribute regular...

Grecians taking classes happened not infrequently. I took a class for Jack Massen when he was ill for about three weeks. And when John Bullard died suddenly in 1961, his classes were taken over by Grecians for the rest of the school year. They were paid quite well for it. That actually makes a fair...

Re: CH History
I stumbled across this site: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=45109 Might be of interest to some. and what comes out of that? Mentioned near the end is a grecian called le Grice; his descendant (now deceased) was Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall in the 1950's and it was that man's son...

For a few weeks, as a result, I was taught by a Grecian, Jasper Griffin (PeA), who has recently retired as Public Orator of Oxford University. which takes us back to the 1800's system of using monitors to teach. They would be taught one week and the next week they each had a class to teach what the...

Re: House Number
What I can't remember is how they allocated House numbers. Was it as simple as ordering numerically those available and then giving them out in alphabetical order? My memory bank does not seem to have that detail available for my year. Given that most people these days seem to leave at the same age...

Reading this thread, one gets the impression that CH was a worse place in the 90s than in the late 50s/early 60s, despite the great increase in (a) physical comfort, (b) opportunities for intersting experiences (foreign trips, for example), (c) girls. Isn't it a question of comparisons? In the '40'...

I'll be the only Mother of the Bride in Marigolds. Munch First, congrats on getting her that far! Sounds like a revolutionary fashion statement; what about the green wellies? :offtopic: However, don't marigolds have some sepulchureal significance to Hindus? We would not want to invoke some form of ...

Back in my day in the 1960s when streaming was in operation it went: Second form Third form Little Erasmus Great Erasmus ( O levels) Deputy Grecians Grecians ( A levels ) Grecians ( 2nd parting ) ( Oxbridge and S levels ) for the intelligent. That is how I ended up taking A levels at 16 years of ag...
