Re: GRACE

There is a charming (and true!) story about a particular Grecians' dance in the 1950s which was held, at their invitation, at a local girls' boarding school towards the end of the Summer Term. The C.H. party duly arrived, accompanied by a master to ensure that well went well. The master was the youn...

Re: RESEARCH - FLYING BOMB

". ..had an element of randomness (understood to be part of the terror effect )" The randomness certainly added to the terror effect, but that was not the German's intention. Hitler's direction was to terrorise the population of central London and all V-1s had their guidance system set to ...

Re: RESEARCH - FLYING BOMB

Brian,
Many thanks for the correction on names, which is very helpful.
I see that you arrived in 1944, presumably in September? This was obviously after the V-1 incident and you were very young at the time, but can you remember any gossip about the bomb?
Thanks again,
David

Re: RESEARCH - FLYING BOMB

" I was at CH in the 1950s and never heard of the Flying Bomb incident. " So was I. I can recall it being mentioned in about 51-52, but in a rather casual way, with a snigger that the masters' cars had been destroyed. I am inquisitive by nature and decided that lock-down was a good opportu...

Re: ANY ARCHITECTS OUT THERE?

Loringa - thank you for that. I had actually read the document to which you refer, but, being a simple-minded person, just could not understand it and was looking for a simple explanation. Plus, hopefully, some comments on what it might have meant for the C.H. buildings, which had been in the vicini...

ANY ARCHITECTS OUT THERE?

As explained elsewhere, I am researching the V-1 that landed at C.H. on 29 June 1944. In his post-war report, Mr Flecker says; "...and various buildings were strained." I understand what 'strained' means in a dictionary sense, but believe this to have a precise meaning for architects and b...

Re: RESEARCH - FLYING BOMB

Thanks for the replies. 'Head Masters's wartime diary.' It is not so much a diary as an account written in 1946 'for the record.' There is at least one copy in the Museum and I have a copy. It is only seventeen pages long, but sheds considerable light on what went on at the school 1939-45. 'Left som...

RESEARCH - FLYING BOMB

I am researching the Flying Bomb/Doodlebug/V-1 which landed and exploded near the C.H. Infirmary at about 5a.m. on 29 June 1944. It came within an ace of inflicting a major catastrophe, but thankfully caused only one minor injury and some relatively minor physical damage. Although eyewitnesses will ...

Re: CH, Degrees and PPE (not the Coronavirus sort)

"why the school these days has to employ what seem to be dedicated staff in sports, arts, drama, etc" You are correct that many academic masters took on secondary roles, especially in sport, but, even so, I think that you are being a little unfair, or, perhaps, you memory is playing you fa...

Re: CH, Degrees and PPE (not the Coronavirus sort)

Concerning masters in the Manual School, I remember the arrival of Mr Ingledew in about 1951-53. He was also the Junior Housemaster in Lamb B, which was my house, and why I remember him. The reason for mentioning him is that I recall very clearly being told that he was the first master in the Manual...

Loringa,
Yes, you are quite correct, the term 'non-foundationers' was the correct CH name for such pupils.

Re: What is CH for these days?

Like Loringa, I find myself, to my surprise, agreeing with the general thrust of Mr Redshaw's comments. As a matter of historical interest, C.H. has admitted what amounted to fee-payers from Day One. They attended the school, but were not on the roll - which is why it is difficult on occasions to ve...

" He also had expressive nicknames for almost all the boys whom he knew. These included Blossom, Henscold, Berkshire, Liz, Fuffinch, Percival, Gubbins, Weasel and Cow (for his senior sergeant, whom he greatly respected) ." One name I recall was 'Death' which apparently was due to the boy's...

Re: The CCF Signals Section

David O'Meara's death was rather sad. Three retired C.H. masters, all living in single flats in Horsham, used to meet on Friday evenings for a pint (or two), something to eat and a long, long chat. One was Bob Rae, one was David O'Meara, but the name of the third I never knew. Anyway, one Friday Dav...

Re: CCF alternative

I believe that the true progenitor of the PSG was John Twitchin (MaA 1952-60). John's father had been killed while serving in the RAF during the war and John became one of the four first four to be admitted to C.H. under Sir Barnes Wallis's RAF Foundation in 1951. John told me that he objected stron...
