Re: Freaky Strides Forward
Thanks Mid A 15 and Katharine. Yes Katharine, don't you remember I posted some time ago to say that your brother and I were in our Prep houses at the same time. He also shares his birthday with Mick Jagger then.

Re: Freaky Strides Forward
It occurred to me later John that you might have enough to do than keep up to date with our birthdays so perhaps we should flag them up ourselves. I'm melting but the budgie seems OK. I guess it's more her sort of climate.
How have I managed to put this thread heading up again????

Re: Lovely grey day
Near bedtime and I've got all windows and doors thrown open and I'm still warm. Gravesend frequently gets hottest temperature in Summer. Still, never mind, I'm just an hour or two away from getting my 75th birthday greeting from JR which I've no doubt will be noted with enthusiasm by Avon.

Re: Underachieving at CH
Nick Duffell has a bit to say about Oxford's pomp and privilege. And Toby Young, a rather right-wing commentator as it happens, was at Oxford at the same time as Cameron and Boris Johnson and he says that they appeared to be running everything there just as they'd run everything at Eton. Even among ...

Re: CH videos
Dobbie, McCall, Husband and Wignall all in a row @ 40 s in this video. Uncanny....... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sezmz_Iaw2Y&app=desktop Who is Wignall? I don’t recognise the name. This video is a real eye-opener for me. CH comes across as even more pompous and grandiose than when I was th...

Re: Lovely grey day
I've got problems inside the house as well. When I reached 65 the state was insistent that I should be fully insulated so along came a bloke to insulate my loft (above the bedroom) for free. In came roll after roll of yellowy stuff and when he'd finished it was so deep that it was way above the jois...

Re: Michael Scuffil
There must be a few of our lot (JR, MS, PWB, Me) who might pop our clogs at some point. Perhaps the moderators could prepare some obituaries ready for the occasion like the papers do. Banker Brown isn't posting quite so much these days - perhaps he won't be long he departs for the great foreign exch...

Re: How far did the rot spread?
I find it interesting that some on this site seem to think that this "can't happen again". That's what I thought when I left CH in 1960 having seen three masters kicked out then. How touching. What evidence do they have that it won't happen again? I'm sure Rhymin' Simon will set it all to ...

Re: Michael Scuffil
Let me re-run the limerick I wrote for him. If by any chance he's gone to the great ivy-encrusted cloister in the sky it can serve as an epitaph:
An eminent Doctor called Scuffil
Was prone to the pedagogue shuffle.
The theories did flow,
Sometimes just a bon mot,
But he always delivered a truffle.

Re: CH videos
I think these were probably posted on here a few years’ back but here are some youtube videos from the Poulton era. Might help refresh some memories and aid those who weren’t there at the time put unfamiliar faces to familiar names: Highway 1989 At about 23.02 the girl being interviewed grew into m...

Re: How far did the rot spread?
Why should we stop arguing about state schools versus public schools? It seems to me the very crux of the matter. This country spends less on state education as a proportion of GDP than most other developed countries and it shows. Of course money is an issue. To argue otherwise is disingenuous. If m...

Re: How far did the rot spread?
Ha Ha! Same old right-wing crap. Politics of envy! Are you prepared to pay the tax necessary Julian to give all the schools the facilities that the public schools have? Where do we start? What about the playing fields? The state schools might have decent playing fields but I have a feeling that some...

Re: How far did the rot spread?
If sending children away from home to be brought up is such a good idea why do other countries not do it? Especially the more developed countries of western and northern Europe that we might compare ourselves to who, almost without exception, have better social cohesion - and indeed more successful ...

Good old Simon! What a spiffing chap he is! The trouble is that all the spiffing chaps in the world have not been able to entirely prevent abuse which was there when I was there in the 1950s (when, interestingly, it took a shorter time to emerge - although some might have said too long) and is still...

Re: Brexit electoral commision report
The problems in this country were on view on tonight's evening news as the news of Bozza's resignation came through. Two people in his Uxbridge constituency said they liked him because he was amusing! He and Jacob Rees-Mogg are like characters out of Brideshead, a novel written seventy years ago abo...
